Abnormal v aginal discharge isn't just caused by STDs or being "dirty". A number of other factors can cause Abnormal V aginal discharge like Diabetes, Use of Antibiotics, Use of birth control pills etc.
It is important to study your discharge as a woman, know what your body produces when you are ovulating, during your cycle, mid-way of your cycle and the beginning of your cycle.
There is no harm in touching the discharge to know if it's slimmy or not, smell it. When you know your discharge very well, you will be able to tell once it's no longer the normal one you see and then quickly visit your health care provider.
Most of the time v aginal discharge is perfectly normal and note that the amount can vary as well as the color and odor. For instance, there will be more discharge when you are breastfeeding, ovulating or s*xually aroused. It may smell different when you are pregnant or you have been letting your personal hygiene slide.
If you have not been studying your discharge, this is the time to start. You can write down what you see at every point in time.
