GOVERNOR ALIA VISITS ATTACK VICTIMS IN FUHSTHO, PLEDGES TO END KILLINGS.

Following the brutal attacks on residents of Otukpo -Nobi community in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State by suspected Fulani militia which claimed nine lives and left many others injured, the Governor of Benue State, His Excellency Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, paid a condolence visit to the Och’Idoma, His Royal Majesty Dr. Elaigwu Odogbo John, on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.

En route, the governor made an impromptu stop at the Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital, Otukpo (FUHSTHO) to sympathize with victims receiving treatment and to console their relatives.

The visit, marked by a long motorcade, was attended by top political figures, media outlets, and journalists from conventional broadcast networks.

On arrival at the hospital, the Chief Medical Director of FUHSTHO, Professor Teddy Eyaofun Agida, and other top management team and staff of the hospital received Governor Alia and led him to the Accident and Emergency Department.

There, the governor extended his heartfelt condolences and conveyed get-well messages to the injured patients.

In his remarks, Governor Alia vowed to put an end to the killings of innocent citizens and charged security agencies to intensify efforts to restore peace.

He also pledged that the state government would assume full responsibility for the medical bills of all patients affected by the attacks. Furthermore, he directed the hospital management to maintain close communication with the state government to facilitate prompt referrals in cases requiring advanced medical care.

Responding, Professor Agida expressed gratitude to the governor for his compassion and assured him that victims would receive adequate and timely healthcare.

The governor’s visit underscores FUHSTHO’s commitment to handling emergency cases with urgency and professionalism.

The Chief Medical Director of the Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital Otukpo, Prof. Teddy E. Agida,IION, Endorses Bill to Give FUHSTH Otukpo Legal Backing

The Nigerian Senate on Thursday held a Public Hearing on the Bill sponsored by Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro, PhD, to amend the University Teaching Hospitals Act and give legal backing to the Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital, Otukpo.

Speaking through the Hospital’s memorandum presented at the hearing, the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Teddy E. Agida, described the bill as a landmark step for healthcare in Benue State and Nigeria.

Prof. Agida said:
"The enactment of this amendment will strengthen the governance of FUHSTH Otukpo, promote accountability and transparency, and improve the efficiency of healthcare delivery to millions of Nigerians."

"It will reinforce our statutory role in clinical training for medical students, resident doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other health professionals. It will also strengthen our capacity for medical research and collaboration with academic institutions."

"Most importantly, it will give stakeholders greater confidence in our institution and position FUHSTH Otukpo as a centre of excellence in healthcare delivery, training and research."

The CMD expressed full support for the bill and urged the Senate Committee on Health (Secondary & Tertiary) to give it speedy passage.

"FUHSTH Otukpo stands ready to work with the National Assembly to ensure this Bill becomes law. This is an investment in human capital, in health security, and in the future of medical education in Nigeria,"_ Prof. Agida added.*

The Chairman of the Senate Committee, Senator Dr. Ipalibo Banigo, noted that there was no dissenting voice to the establishment of the teaching hospital.

With this amendment, FUHSTHO is set to become a hub for specialized healthcare, medical training, research and innovation for Benue State and the nation.

FUHSTHO Launches Lenacapavir PrEP at Infectious Disease Centre

The Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital, Otukpo [FUHSTHO] has commenced the administration of lenacapavir for HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis, making both oral and injectable formulations available at its Infectious Disease Centre.[PrEP]

Lenacapavir is a long-acting antiretroviral medication approved for HIV prevention in HIV-negative individuals. Under the current arrangement, subsidized by the Federal Government of Nigeria, the medication will be provided free of charge to eligible clients.

Speaking at the launch, Dr. Sally Chuwak, Deputy Chairperson of the Medical Advisory Committee on Clinical Services and Head of ART, said the drug offers extended protection against HIV infection. “Lenacapavir is available in oral and injectable forms. The injectable formulation is administered every six months. It is not a vaccine, not a treatment for HIV or AIDS, and is intended for HIV-negative persons only,” she stated. She added that administration is restricted to trained nurses due to the technical requirement to distinguish between subcutaneous and intramuscular layers for effective delivery.

The hospital also introduced the I-Monitor App, a digital tool for tracking and supporting clients on PrEP and other infectious disease programs. According to Mr. Daniel Apo, I-Monitor App representative, the platform will improve client monitoring, communication, and data management for HIV, tuberculosis, and related conditions.

A live demonstration of lenacapavir administration was conducted by Nurse Anyebe, who outlined the clinical protocols and training required for safe use. Pharm. Gina provided an overview of the drug’s origin, clinical profile, and expected public health impact.

The launch was attended by FUHSTHO Chief Medical Director Prof. Teddy Eyaofun Agida; representatives of the Otukpo Local Government Council; CMAC Chairman Dr. Augustine Ogwuche; HOD Pharmacy Otache; and other hospital staff and stakeholders.

Representing the Otukpo Local Government Chairman, Hon. Sule Philips Onyilo said the council would work with the hospital to raise public awareness and address misconceptions about the new PrEP option.

FUHSTHO stated that the rollout of lenacapavir aligns with national efforts to expand access to HIV prevention tools and strengthen service delivery at the facility level.

‎The landmark approval, announced on May 22, 2026, positions FUHSTHO to become a hospital with greater impact across medical training, patient care, and regional healthcare development. The accreditation gives the hospital the mandate to begin training house officers under MDCN’s standards and supervision.

In a concerted effort to strengthen the delivery of emergency healthcare services, the NEMSAS FUHSTHO Chapter Committee, working in collaboration with the Principal Programme Officer of the National Emergency Medical Service and Ambulance System [NEMSAS], Abutu Agada, paid a strategic courtesy visit to the Federal Road Safety Commission [FRSC], Otukpo Unit Command on 12 May 2026.

The visit was aimed at consolidating inter-agency cooperation to ensure the effective implementation of the NEMSAS programme’s mandate of providing free medical treatment to eligible patients within the first 48 hours of critical emergencies.

The focus areas include gunshot injuries, labour complications, road traffic accidents, and other life-threatening conditions outlined in the programme’s operational framework.

Addressing the Chief Medical Director [CMD] of the Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital, Otukpo [FUHSTHO], Mr. Abutu Agada emphasized that the purpose of the engagement was to renew institutional commitment to the NEMSAS programme and to enhance healthcare outcomes across Benue State.

He explained that the visit would facilitate a comprehensive assessment of existing facilities and a review of the programme’s performance since FUHSTHO was designated as the state’s accredited treatment centre for NEMSAS.

“The goal is to ensure that no Nigerian is denied urgent medical attention due to financial constraints during the first 48 hours of an emergency,” Agada stated. “This requires strong partnerships with agencies like the FRSC that are on the frontline of emergency response.”

The Chairperson of the NEMSAS FUHSTHO Committee and Deputy Chairperson for Clinical Services, Dr. Sally Chuwak, expressed satisfaction with the level of preparedness and commitment demonstrated by FUHSTHO’s clinical and administrative teams.

She noted that while the programme was operational, there remained a need for broader sensitisation to ensure that beneficiaries understand their entitlements under the scheme.

Dr. Chuwak further highlighted that engaging the FRSC was strategic, given the Commission’s statutory responsibility in managing road traffic incidents and evacuating accident victims.

By aligning with the FRSC, we can create a faster response pathway for crash victims, which is critical in saving lives within the golden 48-hour window,” she said.

In his response, the Chief Medical Director of FUHSTHO, Professor Teddy Eyaofun Agida, lauded the Federal Ministry of Health, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate, and the NEMSAS leadership for selecting the institution as a designated treatment centre.

He described the designation as a vote of confidence in the hospital’s capacity and a milestone for healthcare delivery in the region.

Professor Agida appealed to the NEMSAS leadership to simplify the claims process and reduce administrative bottlenecks that could impede timely reimbursement and service delivery.

He also called on the public to take full advantage of the programme by contacting the official NEMSAS toll lines immediately in the event of gunshot injuries, labour complications, or road traffic accidents, to enable swift intervention by the FUHSTHO NEMSAS team.

The engagement underscores the federal government’s commitment to reducing preventable mortality through timely emergency care.

Stakeholders at the meeting agreed that sustained collaboration between health institutions, emergency responders, and regulatory agencies is essential for improving health outcomes and building public trust in the healthcare system.

The NEMSAS programme, established under the Federal Ministry of Health, is designed to eliminate financial barriers to emergency treatment during the critical first 48 hours, ensuring that patients receive stabilisation and definitive care with upfront payments by patients after first 48 hours.

FUHSTHO MARKS INTERNATIONAL NURSES WEEK 2026 WITH OUTREACH, LECTURES AND RENEWED COMMITMENT TO NURSING EXCELLENCE.

As part of its annual celebration, the Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital Otukpo (FUHSTHO) held its International Nurses Week celebration on Friday, 8 May, 2026. Held under the theme _“Our Nurses, Our Future: Empowered Nurses Save Lives,”_ the week-long event showcased a marked improvement in the range of programmes presented by the nursing staff, under the distinguished leadership of the Chief Medical Director, Professor Teddy Eyaofun, and the dedicated efforts of all members of the planning and organizing committee.

The celebration featured a free medical outreach programme offering blood pressure and blood sugar level checks, alongside other essential health vitals, provided at no cost to both staff members and the general public.

During the outreach, the Head of Department of Nursing, Nr. Gladys Oche, presented a branded face cap and T-shirt souvenir to the Chief Medical Director.

The gesture was intended to acknowledge his contributions and support to the nursing profession within the past year of his tenure.

The historic event commenced with a welcome address delivered by the HOD Nursing Services, Nr. Oche Gladys.

She underscored the benefits of investing in nurses, stating that a hospital setting without nurses is akin to “a building with equipment but without its lifeblood.”

The programme also included a documentary on Florence Nightingale, the mother of modern nursing, aptly titled _“The Woman with the Lamp,”_ a designation long used by journalists to describe her legacy.

The guest speaker, Dr. Innocent Elaigwu Ekoja, PhD, who holds an impeccable academic record and is currently lecturing at Birmingham University, Nasarawa State, delivered a well-researched and thought-provoking lecture on nursing.

He described nursing as a calling that must be guided by staff welfare, recognition, and respect.

He further emphasized that nurses are often the first and last healthcare professionals to attend to patients, playing a pivotal role in ensuring productive healthcare delivery within the hospital.

He cautioned against burnout and excessive working hours, stressing that optimal care can only be achieved when nurses are adequately supported.

In his remarks, Professor Teddy Eyaofun Agida, Chief Medical Director of FUHSTHO, commended the guest speaker for honouring the invitation.

The CMD reaffirmed his unwavering support for nurses at FUHSTHO in promoting excellence in healthcare.

He called for enhanced managerial and work-related understanding between his office and the nursing staff to further strengthen service delivery at the hospital.

The Vice Chairman of NANNM Benue State Council, Comrade Nr. Atani Daniel Okpeh, expressed admiration for the transformation he observed at the hospital.

He praised the CMD for sustaining the momentum despite limited resources and stated that FUHSTHO nurses are on track to inscribe their names in gold, potentially surpassing institutions that commenced operations earlier.
