LONG WRITE UP BUT READππΎππΎππΎ
The day I realized that no one would speak for me if I did not speak for myself was the day I was falsely accused of stealing company property.
In 2016, after spending two years working with a media organization in Port Harcourt, I faced one of the biggest battles of my career. It was a company known for delaying staff salaries for months, despite making millions in revenue. Sometimes, receiving your salary felt like a miracle.
That same year, I decided to pursue a dream that had been burning in my heart, I wrote and published my first book titled Food and Emotions. I poured my knowledge, passion, and personal experiences into creating a brand and an idea that was completely mine.
As the book started gaining attention and selling quickly, my immediate boss (name withheld) became uncomfortable with my progress. She approached the top management and claimed that I had stolen a company idea and turned it into a book. Before I knew it, I was served legal papers and threatened with a lawsuit. At that time, I was afraid. My hands shook. My heart raced. I did not have a lawyer, I did not have money, and to make matters worse, the company was still owing me six months' salary. It seemed like everyone in authority was ready to crush a young woman who had nobody standing behind her.
But God had a different plan.
One day, my Head of News called me and said: "Lady J, listen to me. Do not be afraid of these people. They are coming after you because you do not know your value. Let me tell you something β you are more than this situation. You have done nothing wrong. Your book has nothing to do with your show or this company. They are hurt because no one, not even the owner of this company, has written a book, but you have proven that nothing can stop a shining star."
Those words changed me.
He encouraged me to stand my ground and tell them that I was ready to go to court. The next day, I responded:
"Please take me to court. I am ready to defend my intellectual property. I am also ready to submit my resignation so I can focus fully on this case." π€·π½ββοΈπ€·π½ββοΈπ€·π½ββοΈπ€·π½ββοΈ
I did not have a lawyer behind me, but I had God, my courage, and my voice.
Three weeks later, I received a message from the Group Managing Director (GMD) requesting a meeting.
When I entered his office, all the top management staff were seated there. It felt like a courtroom. It was me alone β with my truth and my faith.πππ
The GMD looked at me and asked:
"Lady J, why do you want to leave the company?"
Before I could answer, someone said:
"Sir, her leaving does not matter. We can get someone else to fill her position."
The GMD responded immediately:
"No. Not this girl. You cannot just replace her. Lady J, tell me what happened."
I looked him in the eye and said:
"Sir, I am leaving because the General Manager of your station is not comfortable with my growth. I wrote a book, and they are saying it belongs to the company. They are threatening to take me to court, so I have decided to stop working and focus on defending myself."πππππ
The GMD turned to the General Manager and said:π‘π‘π‘π‘π‘π‘
"Madam, what is your problem? You are doing too much. Many good staff members have left because of your attitude, and I have tolerated too much."
Two weeks later, she was removed from that position, and our Head of News was appointed to take overππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»
I remained in the company for another one year and six months before I eventually moved on.
Today, even though I am no longer there, my name and my voice still ring a bell.
My Lessonππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»
Life taught me a powerful lesson: no one is coming to save you.
People will only respect the voice you are willing to use. There will be moments when you are afraid, when you are alone, and when the odds are against you. But if you know your truth, stand on it.
Speak for yourself. Defend your dreams. Protect your work.
Because the day you find your voice is the day the world begins to hear you
