🩸 10 Reasons an AV Fistula Is Often Preferred for Long-Term Hemodialysis

If you're a patient with CKD who is approaching or already receiving hemodialysis, you may have heard about AV fistula (AVF), grafts, and dialysis catheters.

But why is an AV fistula often considered the preferred long-term access?

Here are 10 important reasons:

1️⃣ It generally lasts longer than other types of dialysis access when well maintained.

2️⃣ It has a lower risk of bloodstream infection compared with a dialysis catheter.

3️⃣ It can provide good blood flow needed for effective hemodialysis.

4️⃣ It doesn't require a catheter sitting outside the body, which can make daily life more convenient.

5️⃣ It has fewer access-related infections when compared with central venous catheters.

6️⃣ It can be more durable than a synthetic graft in many patients.

7️⃣ It can reduce the need for repeated procedures to replace an infected or malfunctioning catheter.

8️⃣ It can preserve future treatment options when planned carefully and managed properly.

9️⃣ With proper care, it can serve a patient for years.

🔟 It supports safer, more reliable long-term dialysis for many suitable patients.

💡 But here's the important part: An AV fistula isn't automatically the right choice for every patient. A vascular assessment and early discussion with the nephrology and vascular teams are essential.

And if you have CKD and may need dialysis in the future, don't wait until an emergency to discuss your dialysis access.

🩺 Good dialysis starts with good preparation.

“Madam, please sit down. Let me check your blood pressure.”

This happened in the unit I worked yesterday…

The patient was very sick, and his blood pressure had been fluctuating. His wife was everywhere—sorting out bills, getting medications, calling the doctors, checking on the nurses, and doing everything she could to make sure her husband was okay.

She was so busy caring for him that nobody had stopped to ask:

“Madam, how are YOU doing?”

So I asked her to sit down and checked her blood pressure.

And guess what?

Her blood pressure was higher than her husband’s.

That moment reminded me of something important: caregivers can become so focused on the person they love that they forget to care for themselves.

Stress, anxiety, poor sleep and exhaustion can all affect blood pressure. And when high blood pressure goes unnoticed or untreated, it can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke and kidney problems.

So, if you're caring for a sick loved one, please remember:

❤️ You matter too.
🩺 Check your blood pressure.
💧 Rest when you can.
🧘🏽‍♀️ Take a moment to breathe.
🏥 Don't ignore your own health while caring for someone else.

Sometimes, the person standing beside the hospital bed needs someone to say:

“Madam, sit down. Let me check your BP too.”
