The Art of the Tactical Pause

In business meetings, jumping in with a quick counter-argument is often rewarded. In a relationship argument, jumping in quickly is a recipe for disaster. I teach couples the "tactical pause"—taking three seconds to breathe and actually listen to what your partner is saying before you formulate a defense.

Most arguments escalate because both people are waiting for their turn to talk instead of their turn to understand.
