AKISEMSAS Personnel participates in Infection Prevention and Control Training

Personnel of the Akwa Ibom State Emergency Medical Services and Ambulance System (AKISEMSAS) participated in an Infection Prevention and Control training organized by the State Public Health Unit of the Ministry of Health to strengthen their knowledge and capacity in infection control, at the Akwa Ibom State Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH), Ikot Ekpene.

The training covered the causes of infections, prevention strategies, proper hygiene practices, correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and safety procedures in ambulances and emergency response operations. Participants were also introduced to the One Health approach, which recognizes the link between human, animal, and environmental health in preventing and managing diseases.

Facilitators included Dr. Jacob Etiemana, State Coordinator of AKISEMSAS; Dr. Idongesit Ndaeyo Itaketo, Medical Superintendent, Immanuel General Hospital, Eket; and Dr. Nene Andem, Medical Superintendent, General Hospital, Ikot Ekpene. They emphasized continuous learning and strict adherence to infection prevention protocols.

Key highlights included recognizing hospital safety signs, maintaining safe distances from infectious patients, regular handwashing, proper use of advanced face masks and other PPEs, and preparing hypochlorite disinfectant solutions for cleaning floors and surfaces.
(for surfaces - one portion hypochlorite to seven portions water using the same measurement; while one portion of hypochloride to nine portions of water for floor cleaning. household bleach is a common example of hypochlorite.)

The training enhanced participants’ understanding of infection prevention during emergency duties and reinforced best practices in healthcare delivery. The Ministry of Health noted that the training is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the state’s healthcare system through continuous capacity building and improved service delivery. Participants described the initiative as timely and valuable in promoting professionalism and safer healthcare practices across the state.
