My child looked me in the eye and said "I HATE YOU!" π
My heart broke.
But then I remembered: At 3, 4, 5 years old, they don't have words for "I'm overwhelmed, I wanted control, I'm disappointed you said no."
"I HATE YOU" actually means "I NEED YOU to help me with these big feelings."
Here are 5 gentle things to say back instead of shouting:
1. You are really angry right now, I'm here
2. It's okay to feel angry, I still love you
3. Those are big feelings, let's breathe together
4. You wish I said yes, I understand
5. I'm on your team even when we disagree
Say it calmly. Hug after. The hate will turn to "I love you mummy" in 5 minutes.
