🦟 WORLD MALARIA DAY 2026

“Driven to End Malaria: Now We Can. Now We Must.” — WHO

Nigeria still carries one of the highest malaria burdens globally, but this year’s theme reminds us that we already have the tools to change the story. The question is: are we doing enough, especially as Medical Laboratory Scientists?

🔬 From the lab to the community, we are key to malaria elimination:

• Accurate Diagnosis: Ensuring reliable microscopy, RDTs, and advanced molecular testing for prompt and correct treatment.
• Quality Assurance: Upholding standards that reduce misdiagnosis and combat drug resistance.
• Innovation: Supporting new tools like malaria vaccines, PCR-based detection, and surveillance of resistant strains.
• Data & Surveillance: Providing critical data that guides national malaria control strategies and interventions.
• Community Engagement: Educating the public, supporting net distribution, and strengthening prevention campaigns.
• Research & Policy Support: Driving evidence-based decisions for a malaria-free Nigeria.

This is not just a fight for clinicians or policymakers—it’s a call to action for every Medical Laboratory Scientist in Nigeria.

💡 The science is there. The tools are available. The responsibility is ours.

Let’s rise to the moment and lead from the bench to the field.

🦟 Now we can. Now we must.

The Young Medical Laboratory Scientists Forum calls for a decisive shift from reactive responses to sustained, system-driven preparedness.

This message was reinforced at our 8th Annual Public Health Lecture, held in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, where we brought together key stakeholders, experts and policymakers to address the public health risks of oil spills in the Niger Delta, Nigeria.

Strengthening laboratory infrastructure, equipping frontline professionals and embedding scientific expertise within environmental governance remain critical to safeguarding public health and ensuring accountability in oil spill management.

This convening underscored the importance of collaboration and the role of science in shaping effective, sustainable solutions for environmental health challenges in our communities.

March set the stage with purpose...The Young Medical Laboratory Scientists Forum Annual Public Health Lecture opened with deliberate engagement; courtesy visits that were more than protocol, but a strategic move to deepen collaboration, strengthen institutional ties and align critical stakeholders around a shared public health vision.

These conversations mattered. They created the space where ideas meet influence, where policy dialogue begins and where partnerships are shaped to confront complex challenges like oil spill management and its far-reaching public health consequences.

Because real impact does not happen in isolation. It begins when the right voices are engaged, the right relationships are built and accountability is embraced.

Where conversation ends, responsibility begins.
