IMO Some of the best things in life are fermented.
Wine. Cheese. Sourdough. Beer... Pickles
(And whatever is currently hissing in this jar on my counter.)
Yes, in that order.

Jung called the dream "a little hidden door in the innermost and most secret recesses of the soul," opening onto a night that existed long before any sense of self, and that outlasts it too.

That door does not need to be forced open. It needs attention. Working with dreams, session after session, is one of the oldest and most reliable ways to keep a real conversation going between what you know about yourself and what you don't yet know.

I see clients in Breda and online as a Jungian therapist, IAAP Router. If youre ready to start that dialogue with your own inner world, feel free to reach out.

Visited two basilicas in Maastricht this week with , Sint Servaas and the Basilica of Our Lady, and spent time in both treasure chambers.
Relics, gold, textiles, centuries of devotion kept for centuries. It made me think about a question. What was holy for people in the twelfth century, and where does holy live in our lives now.
In therapy and in the stories people share, i keep meeting the same quiet ache. A life with no belief system and no contact with the numinous leaves a void. Not always named as such, but there.
Jung wrote to a colleague that "the approach to the numinous is the real therapy" (Letters, Vol. I, 1973, p. 377). He meant it plainly. Not treating the symptom, but restoring contact with something larger than the ego.
Elsewhere he put it starker. "The individual who is not anchored in God" has little to stand on against the pressures of the world, he wrote (The Undiscovered Self, 1957), whatever name we give to that anchor.

There is a moment in a lot of fairy tales where the old king is dying and no one in the kingdom knows what comes next. He sat on the throne a long time. The rules he made held things together. and now the room around him goes quiet.

Jung and later von Franz wrote about this as the senex and the puer, the old king and the eternal youth. senex is order, structure, the weight of what already works. puer is possibility, restlessness, what has not been tried yet. neither one is healthy alone. a senex without puer turns rigid and joyless. A puer without senex never lands anywhere.

In therapy this shows up as projection more than theory. Client puts the wise old king onto the analyst for a while, someone steady who seems to hold the answers. thats useful, for a time. but the work is watching that image get older, crack a little, stop being needed in the same way, something more differentiated has to take its place. Not a new idol, just a more honest relationship to ones own authority.

I painted this prince alone in a room some time ago, before i knew id be writing about kings dying. He is not on a throne yet, he is just waiting in the light from the window.

"Food is so fundamental, more so than sexuality, aggression, or learning, that it is astounding to realize the neglect of food and eating in depth psychology."

I've been painting these last summer, and it keeps reminding me of something Jung wrote about, long before anyone called it self-care.

He didn't think creativity was a talent reserved for artists. He called it a "play instinct" — the same faculty a life needs as much as a painting does.

Most of us have simply stopped playing. Busy lives leave no room for the thing that doesn't have to happen — an image you make with no destination in mind, that arrives before you understand it.

You don't need a studio for that. You need ten unclaimed minutes and permission to not know what it's for.

There's a specific kind of dirt that gets under your fingernails and stays there for days, and I've started to think of it as a receipt — proof I touched something real. Most of what I do now happens on a screen: instant, frictionless, gone by evening. But a tomato takes the whole summer, and it doesn't care that I'm impatient. You put a seed in the ground in February and you don't get to rush it. Watching something take months to slowly become itself has quietly done more for me than any amount of chasing trends ever did.

Making choice
Most hard choices aren't hard because we can't see the options. They're hard because both options take something from us, and no rule tells us which loss to accept.
The Greeks knew this. Paris had to choose between Hera's power, Athena's wisdom, and Aphrodite's love. Each choice meant renouncing the others. There was no "right" answer — only the one he could live with, and the consequences that followed. The apple of discord wasn't just about beauty. It was about the violence of having to choose at all.
What makes it heavier is the part we don't like to admit. Sometimes we already know the right thing. We just don't want to pay for it.

Fresh starts are rarely as clean as we picture them.
we imagine a blank page. what actually arrives is the same self, carrying the same shadow, stepping into new light.
Jung would say individuation is not about leaving the old behind. it is about turning toward what we have been avoiding, and letting it come with us into whatever is next. So a beginning holds both things at once, the delight and the difficulty. morning and the night.

On of my favourite quotes from Blake put it plainly.

Every night and every morn
Some to misery are born.
Every morn and every night
Some are born to sweet delight.
Some are born to sweet delight,
Some are born to endless night.

One of my old Watercolors to illustrate new mornings
