WIND, WEATHER, COLOUR

Some landscapes refuse to sit still.

Wind across the lake, changing weather, mountains shifting in and out of view,and colour that seems different every time I look.

These small Lago d’Orta works are less about capturing a precise view and more about what stayed with me afterwards: movement, light, layers and a little bit of chaos.

SUNDAY MOOD

A little wild, a little dreamy, and in no particular hurry.

More feeling needs to go in.

For me, that usually means: not trying to make it too neat.

I want to keep seeing where I pushed, touched and brushed. Where the paint became thicker, where something clashed, where a colour still managed to work its way through.

No panic. The canvas can handle this.

Rolling up an oil painting on canvas? Unstretched canvas?
Yes, that is possible.

These painted canvases are ready to be archived and photographed.

I keep some works unstretched. Not out of convenience, but because the canvas then keeps something of its own movement. It does not always have to be stretched tight, straightened out, or fixed into place immediately.

And honestly: I also find it interesting when a work is not stretched. The lightness of loose canvas, almost like a wall hanging, gives the work a different presence. Less fixed object. More skin, more movement.

Of course, this has to be done carefully. The oil paint must be completely dry before a work is rolled. And when I roll a canvas, I always roll it with the painted side facing out, to prevent wrinkles or cracks in the paint layer.

And no, this does not mean I no longer stretch or frame works. A good collaboration with a framer can add a lot conceptually. Frame and work can strengthen each other enormously.

Firestarter in Dreamland.

A fictional landscape with a lot going on. And what is actually going on there?

A dark figure, a small glowing house-like form, or shelter, shifting ground, and a sky that does not exactly behave.

Sometimes seeing the work is better than scrolling past it.
I’m not sure yet where it will hang, by the way. That is still under negotiation with the wall.

Some works need to be seen in real life.
Not because online does nothing, but because size, surface, material and space only really start to matter then.
