The stethoscope was invented in 1816 by René Laennec, a French physician. Before its invention, doctors used to place their ear directly on the patient’s chest to listen to heart and lung sounds — which was not always practical or hygienic.
Laennec first created a simple wooden tube because he felt uncomfortable examining a young female patient by direct auscultation. The wooden tube amplified internal body sounds and became the prototype of the modern stethoscope.
Over time, the design evolved:
• Wooden tube → flexible rubber tubing
• Single-sided chest piece → diaphragm and bell
• Simple design → modern acoustic and electronic versions
