There’s something subtle that happens the moment you notice a thought instead of being carried by it in some automatic sense. Brain imaging studies show that when attention turns inward, areas linked to self-observation begin to activate, softening the automatic pull of the thought itself. You haven’t changed the thought, but your relationship to it has already shifted.
Ancient traditions have pointed to this for centuries. The Stoics spoke of examining impressions before accepting them as truth. In many contemplative practices, this is simply called “witnessing.” Not fixing, not fighting...just seeing.
And often, that alone is enough to begin disentangling from spiralling thoughts that leave us feeling strung out, overwhelmed and at the mercy of our minds.
