In beginner classes, one question comes up more than most:
What's the difference between Aikido and Ki Aikido?
Koichi Tohei Sensei, the founder of Ki Aikido, took the art of Aikido and brought the mind-body coordination aspect to the centre of the practice. In Japan, this is called Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido — and the art of mind-body coordination itself is known as Shin Shin Toitsu Do.
At their core, there is no major difference between Aikido and Ki Aikido. They are not separate. But in Ki Aikido classes, we start from the inside out.
We first learn how to find a state where mind and body are together, standing still, breathing, simply being present. Then we carry those same principles into Aikido movement.
If you're curious what that actually feels like, your first class is free.
