๐Ÿฆ Zoo Field Trip in August๐Ÿฏ

This time, we took our Japanese learners out of the classroom for a special field trip to the zoo on Teacher Only Day!

We had such a lovely day walking around, playing, chatting and enjoying the animals together. It was a great chance to use Japanese naturally while having fun and spending time together outside the classroom.

And what makes a zoo trip even better? Of course, ice cream!

One of the highlights was seeing the tigers so close. We could really see just how HUGE their paws are! They looked almost like a giant catโ€ฆ just MUCH bigger! ๐Ÿ˜„

A fun day full of learning, exploring and lots of happy memories.

Level 2 Class Japanese Study group recap-Sayonara 2026๐ŸŽ“

And thatโ€™s a wrap for our Level 2 Japanese class for 2026!

We started our final class with something very practical such as writing down our favourite Japanese foods in Japanese! ๐Ÿฃ๐Ÿœ๐Ÿ™

The idea? When they visit Japan one day, theyโ€™ll be able to recognise the words on menus, spot their favourite food in a shop, or proudly say, โ€œI know what that says!โ€ ๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต

Then we took a little trip down memory lane and reviewed everything weโ€™ve learnt so far this year, including some of our favourite vocabulary and phrases. ๐Ÿ“โœจ

It was so lovely to see how much they have grown throughout this session. Watching them remember things, understand new words and become more confident in Japanese is honestly one of the things that keeps me motivated to teach. ๐Ÿ’›

I really enjoy learning alongside these clever little learners, and I feel so lucky to have the opportunity to connect with them, support them and watch their progress. ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต

Thank you, parents, for giving me the opportunity to teach your wonderful children and for trusting me with their Japanese learning journey. ๐Ÿฅฐ

Iโ€™m going to miss them while Iโ€™m away, but Iโ€™m already looking forward to seeing what they can do next year!

More Japanese, more learning, more funโ€ฆ and hopefully lots of Japanese food along the way! ๐Ÿฃ๐Ÿ˜‚

Level 1 Class Japanese Study group recap-๐ŸŽ“2026 FINAL CLASS! ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต๐ŸŽ“

And just like thatโ€ฆ our final Level 1 Japanese class for 2026 is done! ๐Ÿฅนโœจ
No more classes until next year!

For our last class, we went on a little memory-lane run with a mini end-of-term review! ๐Ÿ“๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ’จ We looked back at all the things weโ€™ve learnt this year โ€” and WOW, these little Japanese learners have come a long way! ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‘

We started with the basicsโ€ฆ

๐ŸŒž Ohayล! โ€” Good morning
๐ŸŒ™ Konbanwa! โ€” Good evening
๐Ÿ™‡โ€โ™€๏ธ Gomen ne! โ€” Sorry
โœ‹ And of courseโ€ฆ Onegaishimasu! โ€” the magic phrase when you want something!

๐Ÿ–Š๏ธ Pen, onegaishimasu!
๐Ÿงฝ Eraser, onegaishimasu!
๐Ÿ˜‚ They definitely know how to ask for things in Japanese now!

We also learnt ใ‚ใ‚Šใพใ™ / ใ„ใพใ™ (Arimasu / Imasu), and even tackled directions:

โฌ†๏ธ Kita โ€” North
โฌ‡๏ธ Minami โ€” South
โฌ…๏ธ Nishi โ€” West
โžก๏ธ Higashi โ€” East

Then came the VERY important part of our final classโ€ฆ ๐Ÿ…โœจ

๐ŸŽ‰ A little graduation ceremony!
Everyone received a little treat AND their very own gold medal! ๐Ÿฅ‡๐Ÿฌ

Iโ€™m so proud of how much theyโ€™ve learnt this year, and Iโ€™m going to miss every single one of them while Iโ€™m away. ๐Ÿ’›

Before we said goodbye, everyone also received a Japanese book to take home ๐Ÿ“–๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต โ€” their little homework challenge is to see how much they can read (and figure out how to read it!) before I come back! ๐Ÿ˜†

I hope they keep using their Japanese, remember all those little phrases, and maybe surprise me with how much theyโ€™ve learnt when we meet again next year! ๐Ÿฅฐ

Level 2 Class Japanese Study group recap-Story Time to Rice Ball Ideas!

ใŠใ‚€ใ™ใณใ“ใ‚ใ‚Šใ‚“ใ€(Omusubi Kororin) lesson with our Level 2 students too!

After enjoying the classic Japanese folktale, we reviewed useful Japanese words and phrases from the story and practised writing them down. It was a great way to learn Japanese in context rather than just memorising vocabulary! ๐Ÿ“–โœ๏ธ

We also talked about the difference between ใŠใซใŽใ‚Š (onigiri) and ใŠใ‚€ใ™ใณ (omusubi). They both mean rice ball, but omusubi can give a more traditional or nostalgic feeling, which fits this old Japanese story perfectly. ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต

And then came the BIG questionโ€ฆ ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿค”

"What should we put inside our rice balls for our future Rice Ball Workshop?!"

๐ŸŸ Salmon
๐Ÿ— Teriyaki chicken
๐Ÿฅ‘ Avocado
๐ŸŸ Tuna mayo
๐Ÿซ Chocolate?!
๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฟ Vegemite?!

Some ideas were definitely more adventurous than others! ๐Ÿ˜‚

This lesson was a lovely opportunity to combine Japanese language + culture + creativity. The students practised listening, speaking, reading and writing, while also learning about traditional Japanese food, storytelling and the values behind the story.

Most importantly, they were able to connect what they learned in the classroom with something they can make, taste and enjoy in real life. ๐Ÿ™โค๏ธ

Nowโ€ฆ which filling should make it onto the workshop menu? ๐Ÿ‘€
Salmon? Tuna mayo? Or are we brave enough for Vegemite?! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ™

Level 1 Class Japanese Study group recap-๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ“– Story Time: Omusubi Kororin!

Everyone sat so nicely in front of the screen and was completely ready for story time! ๐Ÿ‘€โœจ

๐Ÿ™ A little language & culture note๐Ÿ™
We all know "onigiri" means rice ball, but did you know "omusubi" means exactly the same thing?
ใ€ŒใŠใซใŽใ‚Šใ€ is the word we commonly hear today, while ใ€ŒใŠใ‚€ใ™ใณใ€ has a more traditional, old-fashioned or nostalgic feeling so itโ€™s a perfect word for this classic story!

๐Ÿ“– The story in a nutshell
An old man, Ojiisan, is working in the mountains when his rice ball accidentally rolls into a hole. He follows it and discovers a group of friendly mice! ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿ™ The mice are delighted with the rice ball and welcome him kindly. But when a greedy old man hears about the mice and tries to copy him, things donโ€™t go quite as wellโ€ฆ

After watching the story, we reviewed some useful Japanese words and phrases from the story and practised writing them down.
One of our favourites was

๐Ÿ‘‰ ใ€Œใพใฃใฆ๏ผใ€(Matte!) โ€œWait!โ€
The word Ojiisan uses as he follows his rolling omusubi! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ’จ

It was such a fun Japanese cultural day and learning not only Japanese words, but also about traditional food, everyday life, storytelling, and the message behind the story. ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ตโค๏ธ

And of courseโ€ฆ we had to find out what happened to that little rolling omusubi! ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿญโœจ

Level 2 Japanese Study group recap-Summer festival๐ŸŽ†

Japan is in the middle of summer right now โ˜€๏ธ, while weโ€™re enjoying winter here in New Zealand! So this week, we took a little trip to a Japanese summer festival without leaving the classroom! ๐Ÿฎ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต

Students learned about "ๅค็ฅญใ‚Š (Natsu Matsuri)" and discovered some of the things you might see there:
๐ŸŽ‡ fireworks, ๐Ÿง yummy festival treats, ๐ŸŽฏ games and lots of colourful stalls!

But there was a language challenge too! ๐Ÿ”Ž

Rather than simply copying words from the board, students were encouraged to search for words and work them out independently. This gives them opportunities to practise recognising vocabulary, making connections with words they already know, and developing strategies for remembering new language.

We also learned how to ask for something at a festival stall using:

โœจ ใ“ใ‚Œใใ ใ•ใ„ โ€” Kore kudasai
โœจ ใใ‚Œใใ ใ•ใ„ โ€” Sore kudasai
โœจ ใ‚ใ‚Œใใ ใ•ใ„ โ€” Are kudasai

And we can also use
ใŠ้ก˜ใ„ใ—ใพใ™ (Onegaishimasu) in everyday situations.

โ€œPen, onegaishimasu!โ€ โœ๏ธ
โ€œEraser, onegaishimasu!โ€ ๐Ÿงฝ

Itโ€™s amazing how much language can be built from just a few useful words!

Regular weekly practice matters.Repeating familiar language and using it in meaningful situations helps students strengthen vocabulary recall and gradually become more confident and independent Japanese speakers.

And of courseโ€ฆ learning Japanese is even better when there are fireworks, festival games and imaginary snacks involved! ๐ŸŽ†๐Ÿก๐Ÿ˜†

Level 1 Class Japanese Study group recap-Summer time๐ŸŽ†๐Ÿฎ

While weโ€™re enjoying winter here in New Zealand, Japan is in the middle of a hot summer! โ˜€๏ธ Let's learn about Japanese summer festivals, or ๅค็ฅญใ‚Š (Natsu Matsuri).

We talked about some of the exciting things you can see at a Japanese festival
big fireworks, yummy food stalls, and fun games!๐ŸŽ‡๐Ÿก๐ŸŽฏ

We then practised some very useful words:

๐Ÿ‘‰ ใ“ใ‚Œ (kore) /this
๐Ÿ‘‰ ใใ‚Œ (sore)/that
๐Ÿ‘‰ ใ‚ใ‚Œ (are)/that one over there

And when we want something, we can simply add
ใใ ใ•ใ„ (kudasai)

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ ใ“ใ‚Œใใ ใ•ใ„๏ผ / Kore Kudasai(This, please!)
๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ ใใ‚Œใใ ใ•ใ„๏ผ/Sore Kudasai(That, please!)

I also brought one of the activities from our worksheet to life! We learned about the festival stalls, including ้‡‘้ญšใ™ใใ„ (Kingyo Sukui) the traditional goldfish scooping game. ๐ŸŸโœจ

The children made their own cute goldfish with paper napkins and put them into a little bag, just like the ones used for goldfish at festivals in Japan. It was such a fun way to learn about Japanese culture through a hands-on activity! ๐ŸŽจ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต
A little Japanese, a little practice, and lots of fun! ๐Ÿ˜Š๐ŸŽ†

Level 1 Class Japanese Study group recap-Direction Detectives on the Case! ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธ

Directions in Japanese:
ใใŸ (North), ใฟใชใฟ (South), ใฒใŒใ— (East), and ใซใ— (West)!

To put their detective skills to the test, we played Direction Detective. I hid hiragana letters inside some paper cups and sealed them shut. The cups were arranged in a giant 6 ร— 6 grid (36 cups in total!).

Students had to carefully follow clues such as:

โžก๏ธ Kita ni 3 (Go north 3 steps)
โžก๏ธ Higashi ni 2 (Go east 2 steps)

If they thought they had reached the correct destination, they got to POP! the cup open. ๐Ÿ’ฅ

Inside some of the cups were hidden hiragana letters. The challenge wasn't just finding the letters, it was figuring out the secret message hidden within them.

And the message was...

๐ŸŽ‰ ใซใƒปใปใƒปใ‚“ใƒปใ”ใƒปใ ใƒปใ„ใƒปใ™ใƒปใ ๐ŸŽ‰

"Nihongo Daisuki!" (I love Japanese!) โค๏ธ

There was lots of excitement, teamwork, and cup-popping along the way. I hope everyone learned directions in the most fun way possible today, Detectives!

Unfortunately, our Level 2 class was cancelled this week as I attended a school production, but we'll be back next week for more Japanese adventures!
