Y MOON TURTLE THO?

Good q.

If you’re a details kinda guy, you might recognise those tiles from out the front of Verona on Karangahape Road. That’s kinda where Moon Turtle became Moon Turtle.

A friend and I were having cheeky bev’ there one evening around the time I was creating the journal that turned out to be Moon Turtle.

“Sam, I’m designing a mood journal!”

I told him amongst the noise, in what was a shout for me. He just looked confused and shouted back,

“What the f**k is a Moon Turtle?”

And naturally, Moon Turtle is infinitely superior to Mood Journal.

Thanks Sam. No mistakes, just happy little accidents 👨🏻‍🎨 It’s silly and it’s sweet. I love it a lot. 🥰

Sometimes I get emails saying ‘Hi team!’ So, here’s the team—with its favourite mug on the steps of its little lair. The team’s name is Anna. 💁🏼‍♀️

Some days I get really overwhelmed and jaded by social media—hence my regular hiatuses. Other days, I really feel it’s a space for sharing.

And I believe in the power of vulnerability in sharing and story-telling to activate compassion and connection.

I believe that connection—in all its many forms—is the ultimate healer.

And so for me, social media is one space we can access connection through vulnerability and sharing. Even just reading someone else’s story can support connection. It can challenge the idea or feeling of aloneness.

You’re not alone; we’re not alone.

It's my hope that this space (and Moon Turtles themselves) can encourage vulnerability for sharing, for telling stories, for compassion, for connection, and ultimately for healing.

Recovery isn't about the absence of hiccups, f**k-ups, or hurdles—whatever you want to call them—they're an inevitable aspect of life.

While that's beyond our control, we can work on how we look after ourselves in light of them—that's resilience, and it's a muscle we can nurture and strengthen.

Building Blocks for Resilience shares diet and lifestyle practices to support mental wellbeing during times of stress, as well as fundraising for research into the veeery promising link between mental health and nutrition.

I'm super excited that this event has moved from Christchurch into our homes. See you there? :)

I feel like I’ve been in the Sims with the speed stuck at 2x—I never introduced you ~formally~ to the latest colony of Moon Turtles.

They’re still 28-days long, but have totally grown up. The inside’s evolved, the outside has evolved, and they’re designed more specifically to help nurture mental wellbeing.

They’re in the store online if you’d like to go say hello, they’re very friendly and sweet 🥰

2020 takes another twist! All these twists, turns and surprises are hard work hey. You’re probably feeling a lotta weird things, maybe weirder and wilder than normal. I sure am.

I’ve set up a wee discount code on the Moon Turtle online store for 20% off to help you help yourself (or a friend) nurture some more gentle, nourishing thoughts and feelings during this topsy-turvy time.

Go nuts if that’s a bit of you, moonturtle.co. There’s a brand new journal to take for a spin 😎

As always—be kind, be gentle to yourself and others.

With love love love,
Anna ❣️

This is one of the most compelling talks I've seen on a promising, effective and accessible solution for mental health treatment. It makes me feel both tremendously angry and hopeful in equal measures.

Have you seen it yet? I can't recommend it enough, honestly. It might just change your life, who knows! It played a role in changing mine. 🥰

I put Moon Turtle: A Mood Journal in the dryer, and it spat out Moon Turtle Mini! So now it's an official member of the family.

Moon Turtle Mini is a 7-day journal designed to support you in nurturing your mental wellbeing. They just arrived yesterday, and already they're heading out to countries far away, and around little ol' New Zealand.

For you friend, you can take one home for $10 inc. shipping. 🥰 Take a peep, they're very cute if I may say so myself.

I have been looking forward to the weekend for two reasons:

1. I’m finally ready to give
’s new album my undivided attention, and
2. Having an extended period of time to try organise this bonkers snowball of thoughts and feelings that had been rapidly growing over the last two weeks.

To help me sort out my soup-brain and confused heart, my journal and I have gone to the back yard for a D n M, and made our way through these questions:

✨ What are your finding difficult?
✨ What are you enjoying?
✨ Who are you feeling for?
✨ What is this an opportunity to learn or practise?
✨ What are you feeling grateful for?
✨ What are some ways you’ve showed kindness to yourself?

Take a moment with BW to settle your mind amongst all the chaos of the outside world.

Stress disrupts and ~disarms the immune system—which is kind of a cruel catch 22 at the moment. 💛✨

Excellent ROI, I promise.

This thought popped up for me a little while ago, and I went through the times I had passed up an opportunity to go swimming because I’d have to wear togs, to go for a run because the sun was out and someone might see me, to go to a party because I didn’t have anything ‘adequately cool’ to wear, a group fitness class because I’m too chubby for that, being in a photo because I might have to see what a look like.

Kinda bleak, super bleak. And it also seems really silly.

It’s funny how these ‘rules’ I apply for myself, I’d never dream of suggesting to others. But I know other people do this for themselves, too. We’re our own harshest critics, right?

And so lately I’ve been practising doing these things despite the discomfort I have taught myself to obey.

I’m ‘allowed’ to go swimming regardless of what my body looks like.

I’m ‘allowed’ to wear a sleeveless top because it’s summer, and it’s hot, and that’s more comfortable.

I’m ‘allowed’ to have a picture taken of myself and not be repulsed when I see it.

That’s just a few things, and they were so uncomfortable at first, sometimes they still are. But it’s getting easier. My body is becoming a tool rather than a barrier.

Feelings aren’t facts, neither are thoughts.

You’re allowed to experience life right now because of your body, not in spite of it.
