🤧 THE FLU — WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

WHAT IS THE FLU?

The flu is an illness that affects your nose, throat, and lungs.
It spreads easily from person to person.
The flu is not the same as a cold — it can make you feel much sicker.

HOW DO YOU KNOW IF YOU HAVE THE FLU?

Flu symptoms come on fast. You might have:
- Fever or chills
- Headache
- Aching muscles
- Feeling very tired
- Dry cough
- Sore throat
- Runny nose

Most people start to feel better within a week.

HOW DOES IT SPREAD?

The flu spreads when a sick person coughs, sneezes, or talks near you.
You can also pick it up by touching something with the virus on it, then touching your face.
You can give the flu to others even before you feel sick.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU GET THE FLU?

Stay home. Rest. Keep away from others.

- Drink plenty of water
- Take paracetamol or ibuprofen for fever and aches
- Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your elbow
- Wash your hands often

WHO NEEDS TO BE EXTRA CAREFUL?

Some people can get very sick from the flu. This includes:

- People aged 65 and over
- Pregnant women
- Children under 5 years old
- People with conditions like asthma, diabetes, or heart disease
- People with a weak immune system

If you are in this group — call your doctor as soon as you feel sick.

There is a medicine that can help, but it works best if you take it in the **first 2 days.**

WHEN TO GET HELP URGENTLY

Call a doctor or go to the Emergency Department if you have:

- Trouble breathing
- Chest pain
- Feeling confused
- Symptoms that get better, then suddenly get worse again

HOW TO STOP THE FLU FROM SPREADING

The best protection is the flu vaccine (flu shot).

- You need a new one every year
- It is safe — it cannot give you the flu
- It is free for many people in New Zealand

Other things that help:

- Wash your hands with soap and water often
- Stay home when you are sick
- Cover your coughs and sneezes
- Open windows to let fresh air in

A 15-minute appointment is designed for one main problem or a couple of simple concerns.

Turning up with a list of 12 issues is a bit like entering a Formula 1 race on a lawnmower — ambitious, but we’re probably not getting to the finish line today.

If you’ve got multiple concerns, please ask our team about booking a longer appointment. It helps your GP give each issue the attention it deserves and keeps the clinic running on time for everyone else.

Breast cancer touches so many lives — our patients, whānau, friends, colleagues, and community. Today was a small but meaningful reminder of the importance of awareness, early detection, support, and hope.

🌬️Cold air + asthma = not a great combo

As the cooler months roll in, we start to see more asthma flare-ups — and it’s no coincidence. Breathing in cold, dry air can trigger coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath

💡 So what can you do?

✔️ Know your Asthma Action Plan
✔️ Carry your reliever inhaler with you at all times
✔️ Take your preventer medication regularly (even when you feel well)
✔️ Protect your lungs from cold air (a scarf helps!)

Your reliever inhaler works quickly to open your airways when symptoms hit — but your preventer helps stop flare-ups before they start

🔥 Top tip: Winter bugs like colds and flu are also common asthma triggers — so staying on top of your plan is key

Your blood sugar should be like a good Wi-Fi signal… stable and reliable!

When blood sugar levels are too high for too long, it can damage your heart, eyes, kidneys and nerves. Diabetes happens when your body can’t properly control glucose (sugar) in the blood.

In Aotearoa New Zealand, over 320,000 people are living with diabetes, and many more are at risk.

The good news? Small steps can make a big difference:

👍 Know your risk

📢 Changes to Prescription Lengths from February 2026

From early 2026, some patients may be eligible for a 6- or 12-month prescription — if it is clinically safe to do so

However:

• Your condition and medication must be stable
• You must not require regular monitoring
• The medicine must be suitable for extended prescribing
• A yearly in-person review is still required

Some medicines are not eligible, including controlled medicines, high-risk medications, or conditions requiring closer monitoring

Prescribers must also consider:
• Your overall health risk group
• Any unplanned hospital admissions in the past 12 months
• Whether you take high-risk medicines

Your GP or Nurse Practitioner will determine if an extended prescription is appropriate and safe for you.
