With just finishing a 49.5 hour working week on top of a 44.75 hour working week, I have taken a few days off to reset, refocus.

With the long weeks, it also involved some very early starts (around 4.45am getting up).

Leaving home in the dark and getting home in the dark has certainly been a challenge to head out into the gym, so it has been all about meditation for me.

Meditation is a great way to keep your balance and not feel out of sync.

Have your thought about giving meditation a try?

Are you feeling BLAH? Struggling to get up in the mornings? Just feeling out of sorts?

At this time of year we blame all the above and more on WINTER!

But could you be lacking in iron, zinc, B12 are your sugar levels out of sync! Why not
have a mid year check up?

Pop in and see your dr, get your blood pressure checked, ladies have your smear done, men get your prostate checked and ask him or her to request a full set of bloods.

Like:
B12/folate
Iron
Diabetes
Liver function
Sodium
Potassium
Creatinine
Cholesterol
And dare I say it ...... Hormones.

It's always a good thing to know what is happening on the inside 😁. And at the end of the day it could be that winter is not for you and that you really are a summer person.

GUT HEALTH...... A healthy gut = A healthy you

We have about 100 trillion gut bacteria and need approximately 85 per cent of them to be 'good'. We lose good bacteria when we drink too much caffeine, when we are stressed, or when we take medication such as steroids or antibiotics.

If you have a gastro episode or food poisoning, this also upsets the balance of bacteria. Poor diet lowers the number of good bacteria, too.

Bad bacteria feed of the refined sugar in processed foods which boost the bad bacteria in the gut. Alcohol and smoking have a similar effect.

What can we do to help our gut bacteria?

Introduce fermented foods into your diet. Fermented foods populate our gut with healthy good bacteria that support our digestive system and strengthen our immune system.

What is Fermentation?

During the fermentation, safe bacteria or yeasts gradually break down the sugars or starch in foods. This produces alcohol or acids that preserve food, increase its vitamin content and add a tangy flavour.

Some fermented foods to try are:

Sauerkraut & pickled vegetables
Kombucha tea
Yoghurt (loaded with probiotics)
Kefir
Miso
Kimchi

***introduce fermented foods slowly into your diet as they may cause you to have a bit of gas, and look for products that are raw or contain live cultures***

What is one of the best things you can do for yourself?

It is learning how to listen to your body and understand what is happening. It does take time, but the sooner you start to understand how your body responds to different foods, drinks, lack of movement, and movement, the sooner you will gain more power in your choices. And your body will respond in kind.

Everything you eat, drink, and do affects you at a cellular level. For example, if you are tired, could it be that you are dehydrated?

Wintertime is often when we don't drink enough water. So keep your energy up by getting water on board. Find it hard to do? Then, why not start by building a good habit?

First thing in the morning, drink two glasses of warm water with lemon before eating.

This is a great way to energize yourself and helps set your digestion up for the day.

Are you doing the Dry July challenge?

I'm excited to reboot my habits this month, focusing on nourishing foods and drinks (cutting back on my coffee intake), that boost my energy and wellbeing.

It's amazing how a mindful approach can help you break free from winter cravings that may have creeped in and feel more vibrant.

Wishing everyone a successful and empowering month!

Essential Oils for the Winter Blues

Citrus oils are some of the best essential oils to relieve winter blues symptoms; they are uplifting and cheerful, and most people like their scents.

Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) is an uplifting, energizing oil. This energizing quality makes it a great oil for those who get tired, sleepy, and unmotivated during the winter months. It is one of the best oils to use in your oil burner on a dark morning when it feels hard to wake up.

Orange (Citrus aurantium varieties: sweet and bitter orange both work) has a sunny character that is perfect during the winter when sunshine seems far away. It is mildly relaxing and can be used in an evening bath blend, but it has an uplifting quality that makes it useful throughout the day. Add a few drops of orange essential oil to your oil burner on its own or combine it with grapefruit or bergamot.

Bergamot (Citrus bergamia) is the oil most aromatherapists turn to when their clients complain about feeling low or unhappy. Bergamot is the traditional aromatherapy mood lifter. Use it in the burner, in bath blends, and in massages, as long as you remember that when used on the skin, bergamot can cause sensitivity to the sun.

How to Use Citrus Oils to Beat the Winter Blues

Add 3-6 drops to your essential oil burner. Use one oil or a combination: citrus oils are generally safe for most people, so you can let your personal preferences guide you. Make a citrus blend for your bath: try any combination of citrus oils you like or happen to have in the cupboard. Up to 6 drops in a bath is enough. If your skin is sensitive, blend the oils in 1-2 teaspoons of almond, jojoba, or other carrier oil, or full-fat milk.

Or have an aromatherapy massage πŸ™‚
