A muka tie is more than just a braid, it’s a taonga made from harakeke, carrying mātauranga, care, and intention.

Traditionally, muka is extracted from the harakeke plant, prepared with care, and woven into cord. One of its special uses is for tying the umbilical cord of pēpi after birth. In this context, the muka tie replaces synthetic clamps, offering a natural, gentle, and culturally grounded way to support this important moment of transition.

Using muka in this way connects pēpi back to te taiao and to the practices of our tīpuna. It’s not just practical, it’s deeply symbolic, acknowledging the sacredness of birth and the nurturing role of Papatūānuku.

In this video, our Tapuhi Ahi Kā team take time to learn, create, and reconnect through the process of making muka ties together. Sharing skills, kōrero, and intention as we continue to uphold and normalise our mātauranga.
