⚠️ Is it a rash - or could it be something more?

This is a question I wish more people asked - because the answer could genuinely change everything.

Some skin cancers do not look like what you might expect. They can appear as a red, scaly patch that looks just like eczema or psoriasis. They can be dismissed for years - because they blend in with common skin conditions.

🔍 But there are clues. A single isolated red scaly patch. A scaly patch that is not itchy. A patch that has not responded to steroid cream. Something that seems to be slowly, quietly growing. These are signs that deserve specialist attention, not another tube of cream and a wait and see approach.

Mohs Micrographic Surgery is the gold standard treatment for two of the most common types of skin cancer in New Zealand - Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) and Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) on the head and neck.

🔸 Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)🔸
The most common type of skin cancer in New Zealand. BCC grows slowly and rarely spreads, but it should never be left untreated. It most commonly appears on previously sun burnt areas - such as the face, neck, and back.

✨ 5 Dermatologist Tips for Acne

One of the things our dermatologists love most is simplifying skincare. Especially when it comes to acne, where so many people are using too many products, the wrong products, or products that are actually making things worse.

Here are five things we recommend to our acne patients - and most of them do not cost a thing. 💛

1. Prioritise your sleep
A regular sleeping pattern supports your skin's ability to repair and regulate itself. Disrupted sleep and acne are more connected than most people realise.

2. Eat well
A Mediterranean diet rich in omega 3 and omega 6 is one of the most skin-friendly things you can do. What you eat really does show up on your skin.

3. Cleanse gently
Use a pH balanced cleanser, wash gently, no aggressive scrubbing, and no more than twice a day. More is not more when it comes to cleansing acne-prone skin.

4. Keep your moisturiser light
Choose a lightweight, non-oil-based moisturiser. Look for active ingredients like salicylic acid, lipohydroxy acid, or niacinamide - and avoid anything heavy.

5. Wear SPF every single day
Sun protection is non-negotiable, even with acne. Look for a lightweight, non-comedogenic formula that won't block your pores.

👩‍⚕️ Things I actually do for my skin - as a dermatologist.

My skincare routine is probably simpler than you think. 💛

Because after years of treating skin every single day, here is what I keep coming back to - the basics done consistently will always outperform the complicated routine you can never stick to.

💦 I drink lots of water, because healthy skin starts from within
⛅ I wear SPF 50+ every single day. Even in winter. Even when it is cloudy
🧴 I keep my routine simple. Cleanser. Moisturiser. SPF 50+-Simplicity beats complexity
🫶 I treat my neck and hands like my face. They age too
