Finding disability information just got easier.

Firstport's new AI assistant is now available for anyone to use.

Ask it a question about disability in everyday language, and it will give you a plain-language answer. Its answers are based exclusively on the human-written information available on Firstport.

You could ask about:
- funding and support services
- disability equipment
- transport
- education or employment
- housing and accessibility.

The assistant is free to use and you don’t need to log in.

Our Firstport team will be at the What's Outside the Box? expo in Wellington (at Ākau Tangi Sports Centre in Kilbirnie) on Thursday 13 August. Come say hi if you're in the area! 👋

What's Outside the Box is a regionwide expo exploring the possibilities of what comes next in the journey after secondary school. It helps people think creatively about what a life for a disabled person could and should be like.

🌟 Stallholder Spotlight 🌟

Our Stallholder Spotlight series is a great way to discover the organisations you'll meet at What's Outside the Box. Today let's meet Firstport!

Firstport is a national disability information and advice website run by Enable New Zealand.

Wherever you are in your disability journey, Firstport is here to point you in the right direction. The site covers a huge range of disability topics from how to access funding, to accessible transport, to connecting with people through support groups and sports.

The Firstport team loves coming to expos like this and connecting with community. Stop by the stall and the team will be happy to chat about how the site can assist you.

We look forward to seeing Firstport at What's Outside the Box! Come and say hello at the expo!

What difference could getting a power wheelchair earlier make in someone’s life?

That’s what our Mobility for Life research project is looking at.

Enable NZ and Disability Support Services are working together to understand the benefits and wider impacts of providing power wheelchairs earlier to people in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Up to 100 people will receive a power wheelchair through the project. Researchers will listen to participants, whānau, carers and the people supporting them to learn what difference earlier access makes to independence, participation, and everyday life.

This is not simply research into whether someone needs a wheelchair or "does earlier access to wheelchairs help people?". It is exploring what earlier provision could mean for people and the disability support system over time.

If you think the project might be relevant to you or someone you support, visit our website to learn who may be eligible, how referrals work and what taking part involves.

Help shape how we work with our customers.

We’re reviewing our Customer Engagement Principles. These shape how our staff interact with customers across phone, online, in-store, at events, and in the community.

As New Zealand’s leading disability equipment provider, and the team behind Firstport and EASIE Living & Demonstration Centre, it's important that these principles reflect what great service looks like to the disability community in Aotearoa.

👉 Share your thoughts through the survey: https://forms.microsoft.com/r/Ps3ivisBNB

The survey is open until 19 June. Your input will help us improve how we support the people and communities we work with every day.
