Movement is medicine.

In naturopathy we often talk about nutrition, sleep, herbs and supplements, but one of the most powerful influences on our health is something much simpler: how we move our bodies each day.

Movement supports the body in ways that go far beyond fitness and appearance. It helps improve posture and balance, regulates the nervous system, supports digestion and gut health, encourages healthy circulation and lymphatic flow, and plays an important role in both brain and immune function.

Often the most important thing is to simply find ways of moving that feel enjoyable and sustainable. Movement does not need to be intense or structured. Walking, stretching, dancing, or any form of movement that allows you to feel joyful and connected to your body can make a meaningful difference over time.

Cultivate… Calm Focus

If you love the ritual of coffee but not the racing mind or jitters that sometimes follow, this one’s for you!

L-theanine is an amino acid found naturally in tea leaves. It promotes a calm, steady alertness by increasing alpha brain waves - helping you feel clear and focused rather than wired and anxious.

I use it often in clinic (and personally) to support calm concentration, reduce feelings of tension, and smooth out caffeine jitters. It can also be used acutely during stressful moments - think presentations, meetings, exams, or just full-on days - to take the edge off without making you drowsy.

When combined with caffeine, the synergy is impressive: smoother energy, sharper focus, and a calm, clear state of mind.

This week in Aotearoa, we’re also recognising Mental Health Awareness Week, with the theme “Let’s Top Up Together” encouraging community, connection, and shared practices for wellbeing.

In my work I see how deeply the mind and body influence each other. The impact of sleep, hormones, gut health, mindset, and the nervous system on mental wellbeing is huge. Healing can begin when we listen to what our body is trying to tell us.

Anxiety, low mood and ongoing stress often arise when we have been running on empty for too long, disconnected from rest, nourishment, and community.
