Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori
Māui and Our Kaupapa
As we celebrate Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori, we take time to reflect on the beautiful pūrākau of our tīpuna and the lessons they offer us today. At the heart of our name, Whakaruruhau a Māui, is the story of Māui, a figure who represents resilience, creativity, and transformation. These are the values that guide and inspire our kaupapa every day.
From the very beginning, Māui’s journey was not easy. Many pūrākau tell us that Māui came into the world unexpectedly and was even rejected at birth, set adrift at sea because he was seen as different and not fully understood. Against all odds, he survived, rescued by his tūpuna who cared for him and helped him grow. These early struggles shaped Māui into someone strong and resourceful. Even when others saw him as mischievous or troublesome, it was his differences that became his greatest strengths, helping him see possibilities that others could not.
As Māui grew, he often faced misunderstanding amd doubt . But through perseverance and courage, Māui achieved incredible things. He slowed the sun to bring balance, fished up Te Ika a Māui to provide for his people, and explored new worlds to bring back knowledge and taonga for his whānau and community.
This journey reflects the experiences of many of the tamariki we support at Whakaruruhau a Māui, especially those with takiwātanga and behavioural needs. Like Māui, our tamariki often face early challenges such as feeling misunderstood, struggling in environments that don’t fit their needs, or being judged by systems that don’t always see their potential. We believe, just as Māui’s story teaches us, that these differences are not obstacles. They are taonga, unique gifts that when nurtured can help our tamariki shine and make their own incredible contributions to the world.
At Whakaruruhau a Māui, our focus is on building strong networks of support around our tamariki and their whānau. Just as Māui was eventually supported by his whānau, we know tamariki thrive best when surrounded by aroha, guidance, and understanding. We work alongside families, schools, and communities to create a safe and nurturing space where tamariki feel valued and empowered.
Māui’s story reminds us that early struggles do not define our tamariki’s future. With the right support and belief, they can grow into leaders, creators, and changemakers in their own unique way. When we walk this journey together as whānau, kaiako, and communities united, our tamariki can transform challenges into opportunities and live proudly in their uniqueness.
This Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori, we honour Māui as a symbol of hope and resilience. We celebrate the power of language, culture, and connection to uplift our tamariki and their whānau. Together, we can create pathways where every child is seen, supported, and celebrated.
