Nearly 8 years ago I graduated as an oral health therapist. Yesterday I came back to Dunedin and wow there’s such big change! My classmate works at the dental school in the special need department and she kindly showed me around!

This space is the student common room. When we were studying we didn’t have a study space or beautiful courtyard. But I’d still love to go back to that precious time 🧡

Our “BLT” was the blue lecture theatre. Was always a bit cold and dark. It looks so much nicer now.

Combination of new and old. The internal glassed wall on the right hand side was the outer wall of the old dental school. Pretty cool design isn’t it?

It’s amazing to see there’s specially designed dental chair for wheelchair at the dental school. Not sure if we have one in Wellington? The room also has plug in nitrogen oxide to relax the patient.

Urgent care unit where clinical staff works

Where students learn.

Simulation clinic where we first learn to cut teeth 😆

Today’s visit is this patient’s third maintenance visit. We are monitoring some decay. They have been suffering from dementia for many years and usually doesn’t have much response during appointment. But today they mumbled “it’s nice” when we used some antibacterial mouthwash on their gums.

Lots of time, without removing the layers of plaque and food, we never find out the cavities and cracks hiding underneath. But many aged care residents especially those with dementia don’t recognise the early warning signs until the infection has spread beyond the tooth and caused more serious health concerns.

Many people assume oral health is completely individual, but the bacteria responsible for tooth decay and gum disease can actually be shared through saliva. This means a partner’s oral health can influence yours through activities like kissing or sharing utensils.

Sugar-free drinks aren’t necessarily tooth-friendly. While they don’t contain sugar, many are still highly acidic—such as sparkling water, diet soda, citrus drinks, fruit tea, and wine. Frequent exposure to acid can gradually wear away enamel.

Your gums cover a surprisingly large surface area in your mouth. If flattened out, the gum tissue would roughly equal the size of the palm of your hand. When gums are inflamed, that represents a significant area of chronic inflammation. Imagine a bleeding pimple the size of your palm on your face, what would you do about it?

After acidic drinks like juice or wine, it’s best to wait about 30 minutes before brushing. Acid temporarily softens enamel, and brushing immediately can cause additional wear. Saliva needs time to neutralise the acid first.

Not all cavities need fillings right away. In the earliest stage, tooth decay can sometimes be stabilised or reversed with fluoride, diet changes, and good oral hygiene. Once the decay progresses deeper into the tooth, however, a filling becomes necessary.

How many did you get right? 🦷
