Nelson woman Alley Papadopoulos was supposed to be in the hospital today, recovering from a hysterectomy, but her surgery was postponed by two weeks due to the strike.

Instead, she spent her day handing out ice blocks and cups of frozen fruit to union members at a rally in the city centre.

She told 1News she had been on the surgical waiting list for more than a year but was "pretty joyous" to be at the rally.

"I have been waiting a long time, and I was supposed to have had my surgery yesterday but, to be able to be here and then get my surgery, it means a lot."

💡 We appreciate you joining us as we unpacked the government’s latest health funding announcements.🙏

🔍It’s been a challenge—sometimes impossible—to get real clarity on the scale and specifics of what’s actually been promised, how it’ll be delivered, and who wins (or loses) in the process. And honestly? That’s not good enough. It shouldn’t be this hard to get straight answers and data. Requests for transparency shouldn’t be ignored by our leaders—local or national. This isn’t a game. These are real lives, real communities, and real people fighting for the accessible, equitable, high quality healthcare we pay for and deserve.🩺

📨Side note: While the HIkoi for Health coalition first came together to fight the downgrade of maternity services at Whakatāne Hospital, it’s clear from our research and conversations with exhausted frontline health workers that maternity is just the first to take the hit—it won’t be the last. The structural issues run deep, and our health system is hemorrhaging. 💔🏥 It’s the result of years of passive negligence: underfunding, painfully slow and disconnected bureaucratic processes, and a total lack of transparency and accountability. Is it deliberate? Is it incompetence? Is anything changing for the better at all under Simeon Brown MP in light of these recent announcements? We'll keep watching, questioning, and prioritizing the people of the Eastern Bay—because we deserve better. We hope you’ll stick with us on this journey. 💪✨
