"The online zoom meeting was a Psychological First Aid training session led by Simon, facilitated virtually by Jacynthia for a group of around 40 wahine from a church context. Simon explained the concept of Psychological First Aid as basic support for mental health crises, using the analogy of physical first aid, and shared his background as a paramedic and trainer. He used case studies, including his own experience with PTSD and stories about people in crisis, to illustrate how to respond safely, assess risk, and use talk therapy to support others. The session covered topics such as anxiety, depression, bullying, su***de, psychosis, bipolar, cyclone and COVID fatigue, and the importance of knowing when to refer to higher levels of care. Simon emphasized the value of active listening, acknowledging feelings, and connecting people to further help when needed, as well as the importance of self-care and looking after one’s own “stress bucket” or “fish tank.” Jacynthia and participants asked questions about practical responses to crises, including de-escalation, grounding techniques, and the role of pastoral care and cultural support. The session ended with feedback from participants, expressions of gratitude, and a waiata sung by the group."
