“After an argument, live like a child.” — Shipibo shaman Lucila

Lucila says that peace begins with a simple decision: don’t keep feeding yesterday’s pain.

According to her, when we hold onto arguments, resentment, or misunderstandings, we keep giving energy to what hurts us.

Children fight, cry, and then return to playing.

“What happened yesterday should stay in yesterday,” she says. “Today is a new day.”

Whether or not you follow the Shipibo tradition, there is something powerful in that reminder.

What is one thing you’re ready to leave behind today?

“Preparing for Ayahuasca retreat starts long before the ceremony”
—Shipibo shaman Lucila

Lucila explains that guests are encouraged to gradually reduce sugar before arriving, allowing their bodies and minds time to prepare. Once at the center, each person is observed and supported before participating in ceremony.

For the Shipibo people, ayahuasca has traditionally been approached with deep respect. It isn’t seen as something to take casually, but as a sacred medicine that deserves careful preparation, guidance, and integration.

Every person arrives with a different story, and according to Lucila, every journey begins with listening.

Lucila explains that Mapacho, the sacred Amazonian tob*cco, is traditionally used very differently from commercial c*garettes.

In the Shipibo tradition, it accompanies ceremonies, prayers, healing work, and daily life. According to Lucila, its smoke is used to cleanse spaces, strengthen intention, and protect against heavy or negative energies.

For many visitors, this is one of the most surprising parts of Amazonian plant traditions.

Had you ever heard of t*bacco being used this way before?

“What if to***co had a completely different purpose than you were taught?”

Lucila is sharing how Mapacho, the traditional Amazonian to***co, is prepared for vomitivo(purge) in her Shipibo tradition.
The leaves are washed, cut, soaked overnight, and prepared with great care and respect before being used in a traditional cleansing practice.

For Lucila, this is sacred work passed down through generations, and it is approached with discipline, intention, and guidance.

Whether or not you share these beliefs, it offers a rare glimpse into a healing tradition that most people outside the Amazon have never seen.

Had you ever heard of to***co being prepared this way before?

“Why are dreams important in Shipibo healing tradition?”

According to Lucila, dreams can reflect what’s happening within us.

She explains that when the mind is overwhelmed, filled with worries, or emotionally unsettled, sleep can become restless and dreams may feel confusing or frightening.

But when the mind finds peace and the body feels balanced, dreams can become calmer and more beautiful.

For Lucila, dreams aren’t just random. They’re part of how we begin to understand ourselves.

Whether you see dreams through the lens of psychology, neuroscience, or ancestral traditions, they’ve fascinated humans for thousands of years.

Do you usually remember your dreams when you wake up?

“Most people see trees. Shipibo healers see medicine.”— Shipibo shaman Lucila

When Lucila walks through the Amazon, she doesn’t just see a rainforest.

She sees the plants her grandparents taught her to recognize. The remedies that have cared for generations of her community. The wisdom she hopes to pass on to her children and grandchildren.

“The Amazon is our hospital,” she says.

For the Shipibo people, the forest isn’t simply a place to live. It’s a living source of food, medicine, and ancestral knowledge that has been passed down for centuries.
Every walk through the jungle is a reminder that there is still so much we have yet to learn from nature.

If someone took you into a forest and told you every tree had a purpose… would you believe them?

“Why is isolation an important part of Amazonian healing?”

According to Lucila, time in solitude allows people to slow down, listen to themselves, and begin understanding what they’re carrying inside.

She explains that when we’re constantly surrounded by other people, we’re also surrounded by their energy, opinions, and distractions.
Creating space to be alone can make it easier to reflect, process our experiences, and reconnect with ourselves.
After this period of isolation, people return to share what they’ve experienced and how they feel.

For Lucila, healing isn’t only about the plants. It’s also about making room for clarity, peace, and self-understanding.

When was the last time you spent a full day in silence, without distractions?

Before harvesting a medicinal plant, Lucila pauses to sing.

Because, in the Shipibo tradition, gratitude comes before taking.
This is a traditional song of thanks and welcome to Mother Nature, a way of asking permission before working with a medicinal plant.

It’s a reminder that healing isn’t only about the plants themselves. It’s also about the relationship we cultivate with the natural world.

Imagine if every time we took something from nature, we first stopped to say, “Thank you.”

Do you think we would treat the Earth differently if gratitude came before consumption?

“Can emotional trauma affect the body?”

Lucila believes the answer is yes.

From her perspective as a Shipibo healer, when we carry emotional burdens for a long time, they can also be felt physically. Through fatigue, heaviness, or a lack of energy.

This reflects a traditional understanding within her culture of the close relationship between the mind, emotions, and the body.

Whether you see it through the lens of indigenous wisdom, psychology, or your own life experience, many people recognize that our emotional well-being and physical well-being can influence one another.

Have you ever noticed stress or emotional challenges affecting your body?
