Ready, get set... waitโฆouch, my back hurts.
Who would have thought that I'd have to stop playing table tennis because of a sudden sharp pain in my back?
I always believed that there was nothing wrong with me. I simply went about my daily routines, from studying to playing table tennis. I would describe myself as the kind of student who carried a lot of books in my backpack because I never wanted to miss or forget anything important. I often complained about how heavy my books were, but I never suspected that something was wrong because I was too focused on my academics. As an outlet, I spent most of my free time practicing table tennis to relieve my stress and pressure.
After classes and during weekends, I loved playing table tennis with my friends. Every match was exciting, and I enjoyed challenging myself to improve my speed, reflexes, and techniques. Playing table tennis became one of my greatest passions, and I looked forward to every opportunity to step onto the court. However, things started to go downhill when I began noticing my posture whenever we went to church.
One Sunday in March, while I was serving as an usherette in our local church, my mom noticed how unusual my posture looked when I stood beside the other girls. I felt like a bent ruler that could snap at any moment if someone tried to straighten it forcefully. I was in denial and kept telling myself that it was just how I naturally stood. But as the days went by, it no longer seemed normal.
I was fully aware that treating scoliosis would require a huge amount of money, so I tried to ignore my worries by focusing on school and practicing table tennis. However, everything changed when I suddenly felt pain in my back near my shoulder during one of our practice sessions. I immediately called my mom to explain what I was experiencing, and we had no choice but to visit a doctor.
"I don't want this. In fact, why was I even born with scoliosis?" Those were the thoughts running through my mind as we went to see the doctor. I prayed that my spine would be normal and that nothing serious would be found. Unfortunately, the exact thing I feared became a reality.
After the consultation, I felt hopeless. I stopped playing table tennis for a while because the results were too painful to accept. I was diagnosed with dual scoliosis: upper (severe) and lower (moderate). I was also worried about my parents and the financial burden of buying a custom brace for me. Despite those worries, I chose to place my trust in God and seek His guidance through everything I was facing.
Months passed, and I began attending therapy sessions and doing treatment exercises for my scoliosis. The first time I wore my brace, it felt incredibly tight. It was a completely new experience, and I gave myself time to adjust to my new routine.
Gradually, life became brighter. Every day became another opportunity to heal, and I could feel myself improving little by little. With my doctor's approval, I slowly returned to playing table tennis. Holding the paddle again reminded me of how much I loved the sport. Although I had to be more careful and listen to my body's limits, I was grateful to be back doing what I enjoyed. The journey is meaningful because of the following people: Ms. Jona Tayson Ogatis, my therapist, who helped me introduce new exercises to improve my posture and spine. Lastly, Dr. Ma. Celine n. Villo, the one who guided me on what possible ways for me to become better and fixed.
Scoliosis changed my life in unexpected ways, but it also taught me resilience, patience, and gratitude. I realized that healing is not just about wearing a brace or attending therapy; it is also about finding the strength to keep moving forward despite life's challenges. I am looking forward to the near journey of my scoliosis, where I will be cured with the help of my therapist and doctor.
