An 11-year-old Canadian boy died from rabies weeks after waking with a bat on his face, in a case that doctors say underscores the importance of seeking immediate medical attention after any direct contact with a bat, even when there are no visible bite marks.

According to a report published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal on Monday, the previously healthy boy from Ontario died after developing rabies following a bat encounter at a cottage in northern Ontario.

The incident reportedly occurred in the summer of 2024.

ICYMI: Training Completed Successfully!

We are proud to share the successful completion of the 2nd Onsite Training on the Management of Animal Bite and Rabies Exposure for Physicians and Nurses this year, held on June 9–11, 2026 in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental.

This training brought together dedicated healthcare professionals committed to enhancing their knowledge and skills in the proper assessment, management, and prevention of rabies exposure. Through continuous learning and collaboration, we strengthen our collective efforts in providing quality patient care and advancing rabies prevention in our communities.

As our students head back to school, let's make health and safety a priority both inside and outside the classroom.

Children are naturally curious and often interact with dogs, cats, and other animals while walking to school, playing with friends, or spending time outdoors. A single bite or scratch can put them at risk of rabies—a disease that is 100% preventable but almost always fatal once symptoms appear.

✅ Teach children not to approach unfamiliar animals.
✅ Avoid teasing or provoking pets.
✅ Report any bite or scratch immediately.
✅ Wash wounds with soap and running water for 15 minutes.
✅ Seek medical attention as soon as possible.
