Marahil ay posibleng magtaka kayo: “Nabakunahan naman, bakit namatay pa rin?”

Ang sitwasyon ng batang nasa larawan, ayon sa ulat, ay nakagat ng isang rabid dog o asong may rabies, at ang kagat ay nasa ulo, isang exposure na itinuturing na lubhang mapanganib dahil malapit ito sa utak. Pinabalik pa sila "umano" kinabukasan para maturukan.

Sa ganitong sitwasyon, ORAS PO ANG KALABAN. Hindi sapat ang anti-tetanus dahil ang tetanus vaccine ay hindi proteksyon laban sa rabies.

Kapag may mataas na panganib na exposure sa rabies, lalo na sa bata at sa kagat sa ulo o leeg, kinakailangang maagang ma-assess at masimulan ang rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP). Kabilang dito ang agarang paghuhugas at paglilinis ng sugat, rabies vaccine, at kung indicated, rabies immunoglobulin (RIG/ERIG).

Ayon sa WHO, ang rabies PEP ay dapat simulan agad ASAP at WALA DAPAT DELAY. Ang layunin nito ay pigilan ang rabies virus na makarating sa nervous system.

Kaya sa bawat kagat o kalmot ng hayop na posibleng may rabies:

HUWAG MAGHINTAY. HUWAG IPAGPALIBAN.

Agad na magpakonsulta sa pinakamalapit na Animal Bite Center o emergency facility na may kakayahang magbigay ng kumpletong rabies PEP.

Kapag lumitaw na ang SIMTOMAS ng rabies, ang sakit ay halos palaging NAKAMAMATAY. Ngunit ang rabies ay isang sakit na maaaring maiwasan kung maagap at tama ang post-exposure prophylaxis.
