💔THE HARDEST PART ISN’T ALWAYS THE AUTISM.

Sometimes, the hardest part is explaining.

Explaining why your child behaves differently.
Explaining why you had to leave early.
Explaining why you can’t simply “make him behave.”
Explaining why a simple outing can take so much preparation.
Explaining why he can't talk.

Sometimes, it’s the judgment.

The looks.
The whispers.
The unsolicited advice.
The people who assume you’re not parenting your child properly.

Sometimes, it’s the financial pressure.

Therapy.
School needs.
Assessments.
Transportation.
Daily expenses.

And sometimes, it’s the uncertainty.

Wondering what your child’s future will look like.
Wondering if they will be understood.
Wondering who will care for them someday.

Autism itself can be challenging.

But having to constantly fight for understanding, acceptance, and support can make the journey even harder.

So if you see an autism parent struggling,
you don’t have to know exactly what to say.

Sometimes, the kindest thing you can give is simply:

“I’m here. You don’t have to explain everything to me.” 💙

Because behind every parent trying their best
is a child they love more than words can ever explain.

Too Much – Gustatory Over-Responsivity

Focus: Taste, Texture, and Food Sensitivity

💛 Thank you for the wonderful support on our Sensory Series posts!

Today, we continue our journey through the sensory systems with Gustatory Over-Responsivity, focusing on how some children respond strongly to taste, texture, temperature, and food flavors.

For some children, certain foods may feel too strong, uncomfortable, or overwhelming. A taste or texture that seems “small” to others may feel very big to their sensory system.

They may refuse certain foods, gag easily, avoid mixed textures, or become upset when new food is offered.

This is not always about being picky, stubborn, or maarte.

Sometimes, the child’s sensory system is reacting strongly to taste and food-related sensations.

As always, here’s a simple, OT-inspired home activity with small, manageable steps to try together. Let’s learn gently! 🌉

What Parents May Notice:

1. Strong food flavors — May react strongly to sour, bitter, spicy, or strongly flavored foods.
2. Food textures — May avoid crunchy, mushy, slimy, sticky, or mixed textures.
3. New or unfamiliar foods — May become upset, anxious, or refuse when a new food is offered.
4. Mixed foods — May prefer food separated and avoid dishes with many ingredients mixed together.
5. Food temperature — May strongly prefer food that is warm, cold, or room temperature.
6. Smell before tasting — May smell, inspect, or check food carefully before eating.
7. Specific food preparation — May only accept food when it is cooked, sliced, arranged, or served in a familiar way.

🎯 Activity: Food Explorer Steps

A gentle food exploration activity to help your child become more comfortable with food in a safe, calm, and predictable way.

🌻 How to Play (Simple Steps):
Trigger: Taste, texture, smell, and food exploration
Motivator: Sticker, favorite plate, food chart, praise, or small reward at the end

1. Choose one food your child is not yet comfortable eating.
2. Place a very small amount on a separate plate, away from the main meal.
3. Let your child look at the food first. Do not require eating right away.
4. Invite your child to smell, touch, kiss, lick, or take a tiny bite only if they are ready.
5. Praise effort, not eating. Stop anytime your child becomes uncomfortable.

Safety First:
Do not force feeding, surprise bites, or pressure your child to swallow. Avoid using fear, threats, or punishment around food. Keep food exploration calm, predictable, and child-led.

───
🌱 Gradation — Food Explorer Steps

Level 1 – Look and Notice
Look at the food → Talk about color, shape, or smell → Keep it on a separate plate.

Level 2 – Touch and Smell
Touch with a spoon or finger → Smell the food → Praise calm participation.

Level 3 – Kiss, Lick, or Tiny Taste
Bring near lips → Kiss or lick only if comfortable → Tiny taste only if ready → Praise effort.

───
💛 GPS Parent Support

🧭 Understand Their Feelings
“I can see this food feels hard for you right now. It’s okay.”

🧭 Create a Clear Road
“We will only look at it first. You do not have to eat it today.”

🧭 Give a Helping Hand
Use a separate plate, offer choices, model calmly, keep portions tiny, and celebrate small wins.

───
🌱 QB Reminder

❄️ The goal is not to force your child to eat everything right away.
❄️ The goal is to help your child feel safe and supported around food.
❄️ Food tolerance grows through calm, repeated, low-pressure exposure.
❄️ Looking, smelling, touching, kissing, licking, or taking a tiny taste can already be progress.
❄️ Small steps matter more than quick results.

───
🌉 OT Home Carryover Activity

If you notice your child strongly reacts to certain tastes, textures, smells, or food preparation, you can gently try this Food Explorer Steps activity at home.

Start small, keep it calm, and observe how your child responds. Small, joyful food experiences can help your child build comfort and confidence over time. 💛
