A dose of caffeine a day may keep acute kidney injury away!

Systematic review finds that in addition to the beneficial effects on apnea of prematurity there are renal benefits as well!

Benefits of early (< 7 days of age) administration

✅ Large reduction in AKI (915 participants; aOR 0.16; 95% CI 0.09-0.31; low-certainty evidence).

✅ Reducing maximum serum creatinine levels (one study; 50 participants; MD -0.42 mg/dL; 95% CI -0.58 to -0.26; very low-certainty evidence)

I meet a lot of parents going through the journey in the NICU.

✨ Here are 7 points to help you on your path. ✨

1. Your baby is stronger than they look. Premature infants show remarkable resilience and strength every day.

2. Progress in the NICU is rarely a straight line. There will be good days and harder days like the stock markets ups and downs. Setbacks can happen, but they are often part of the journey.

3. Small victories matter so take note when they happen. A few grams gained, one less tube, the first feed, or the first cuddle are meaningful milestones.

4. Your presence is powerful. Your voice, your touch, and your love are incredibly important to your baby’s development and comfort.

5. It’s okay to feel everything. Fear, hope, exhaustion, gratitude can come and go sometimes even in the same day.

6. Take it one day at a time. Focus on today’s progress rather than the entire road ahead.

7. You are an essential part of your baby’s care team. Parents are not visitors in the NICU—they are partners.

We talk a lot about survival in the NICU. We don’t talk enough about what survival feels like.

1. Growth charts don’t measure fear.
2. You can be grateful and sill angry.
3. Stable doesn’t always mean safe.
4. Discharge day can be terrifying.
5. You don’t stop listening for alarms when you go home.
6. Milestones feel different after monitors.
7. Relief and grief can live in the same body.
8. The NICU changes the whole family, not just the baby.
9. Survival doesn’t cancel trauma.
10. You can miss the nurses and still never want to see the unit again.

Which one do you relate to the most?
