Eczema and Food Allergies in Children: What Parents Should Know 👶💛
During consults on Eczema ( Atopic Dermatitis), the most common question most parents ask me in the clinic, "Doc, dahil po ba sa food allergy kaya may eczema si baby? (Is my child’s eczema caused by food allergies?)
” The answer is — sometimes, but not always.
🌿 What is eczema?
Eczema (also called atopic dermatitis) is a condition where the skin becomes dry, itchy, and inflamed. It often starts in infancy or early childhood.
🍳 Where do food allergies come in?
Some children with eczema may also have food allergies — commonly to milk, eggs, peanuts, soy, or wheat. But NOT every child with eczema has a food allergy.
⚠️ Important points to remember:
• Food allergies usually cause immediate reactions (hives, swelling, vomiting), not just dry skin
• Eczema alone does NOT automatically mean a food allergy
• Removing foods without proper guidance can lead to poor nutrition
🔍 When should you suspect a food allergy?
• If eczema flares consistently after eating a specific food
• If there are other symptoms like hives, vomiting, or breathing problems
• If eczema is severe and difficult to control
👩⚕️ What should parents do?
• Focus on good skin care (moisturizers are key!)
• Avoid self-prescribing food restrictions
• Consult your Pediatrician or Allergy specialist or Dermatologist for proper evaluation
💡 Bottom line:
Not all eczema is caused by food allergies. Proper diagnosis matters to avoid unnecessary diets and ensure your child grows healthy.
If you’re unsure, seek professional advice — don’t guess. Your child’s skin (and nutrition) will thank you.
