Patience is truly a virtue.
Today, I had the privilege of handling my second patient with special needs, and once again, this experience reminded me why I chose this profession.
Being a dentist is never just about treating teeth. Itās about understanding the person behind every smile.
When this little patient came to me, I knew it wouldnāt be an ordinary extraction. Children with special needs require more than clinical skillsāthey need patience, empathy, understanding, and above all, trust.
And while there are situations where general anesthesia is truly necessary, I also believe that if itās safe and possible, every child deserves the chance to experience dental treatment in the least traumatic way.
This wasnāt a race to finish the procedure.
It was a journey of earning a childās trust.
His tooth was already very loose, so fortunately, local anesthesia wasnāt necessary. I only needed topical anesthesia. Ironically, applying the topical anesthetic became more challenging than the extraction itself.
So I slowed everything down.
I wanted him to feel that he was safe, respected, and that he was in control as much as possible.
Little by little, the fear faded.
The trust grew.
But honestly, the successful extraction wasnāt the biggest victory today.
The real success was seeing a child leave the clinic without fearā¦ and watching his parents smile with relief because they witnessed that their child could actually receive dental treatment without being traumatized.
Moments like these remind me that dentistry isnāt measured by the number of procedures we complete.
Itās measured by the lives we touch.
As a dentist, I always want my patients to remember not just that I treated their teeth, but that I treated them with kindness, patience, and compassion.
Because at the end of the day, people donāt come back simply because youāre technically good at what you do.
They come back because you made them feel safe.
They come back because they trusted you.
And for me, there is no greater achievement than earning that trust.
This will always be one of the most memorable cases of my career, and a beautiful reminder that sometimes, the greatest victories in dentistry donāt happen inside the mouthāthey happen inside the hearts of our patients and their families. ā¤ļøš¦·
