Don't let this week's setbacks define you. Rest. Recuperate. Begin again.

The road ahead may hold something better than you imagined.

and what if
after everything,
yesterday was not the end?
and something wonderfully
worthwhile
awaits around the bend?

I often add a qualifier like “what if”
not to weaken the thought, but to acknowledge the unknown. It may not always fill sure, but it does leave open space to wonder. For me, “what if” is a starting point, especially when imagining what could be begins to feel too distant, too foggy.

I used to travel a lot in my early 20s (as a musician), and I’d love when we travel through regions that had scenic overlook spots. Being so young then, I remember taking those photos, often thinking: “someday, I’ll be back! And when I come back, I’ll spend more time taking it all in.”

However, over a decade has passed since those days, and I haven’t been back to the spots in the photos. As time goes on, it gets hard to imagine returning. But at the same time, as I’ve learned to illustrate and create scenes on a page, I’ve begin to embrace the “what if.” Sure, the scene image only lives on a page but at the same time, what if what seems far away comes to life in a new way? Something unexpected, yet worthwhile.

“What if,” “perhaps,” and “maybe” have become mainstays in my vocabulary for many things. I don’t see them as simply a hesitation to say the thing fully. Instead, I seem these kind of phrases as a recognition of what I genuinely do not know, while also carving out space to imagine what might be possible, anyway.

I am not saying you must always qualify a statement with “what if” or “perhaps.” There are many times where the opposite works and is necessary, and declaring boldly is of course a powerful thing. And at the same time, there are these spaces in between, where it’s genuinely hard to imagine, to see the path ahead - and I hope in those spaces you can give yourself the permission of the what-if.

What if I haven’t seen it all yet?
What if I do get to see the effort really did matter, in ways I’ll someday see?
What if, somehow, there ends up being something wonderfully worthwhile, anyway?

I can’t tell you how it all plays out, but when it’s hard to imagine what’s ahead, I hope you can embrace the “what if” however you can.
