Last June 18–20, 2026, I had the privilege of attending the 4th Annual Conference of the College of Otorhinolaryngologists – Head and Neck Surgeons, Academy of Medicine of Malaysia (CORLAMM) and the 46th Annual General Meeting of the Malaysian Society of Otorhinolaryngologists – Head and Neck Surgeons (MSO-HNS).

The conference featured insightful lectures, surgical videos, and discussions covering various areas of otorhinolaryngology. As someone pursuing fellowship training in otology and neurotology, the sessions further strengthened my understanding of various surgical techniques, evidence-based practice, and the principles that guide safe and effective patient care.

The Gala Night also provided an opportunity to meet and interact with my professors and several distinguished speakers whose expertise and contributions continue to advance our specialty.

Continuing medical education is an essential part of our profession. Every conference is an opportunity to refine our knowledge, learn from leaders in the field, and ultimately provide better care for our patients.

Two weeks into my fellowship training in Otology, Neurotology, and Skull Base Surgery here at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia — and every single day has been a reminder of how much there is still to learn in medicine, surgery, and patient care.

In just the past two weeks, I’ve had the privilege of:

1. witnessing a cochlear implantation in a patient with an anomalous course of the facial nerve
2. assisting in a mastoidectomy with excision of a skull base meningioma extending into the middle ear
3. assisting in an endoscopic-assisted ear surgery for middle ear cholesteatoma with ossicular chain discontinuity
4. attending clinics with my Professor and discussing complex neurotologic cases such as vestibular hydrops and acoustic neuroma
5. participating in multidisciplinary conferences with Radiology to review imaging and optimize surgical planning for patients
6. beginning manuscript writing for interesting cases encountered in the clinics

One thing I’m quickly realizing is that excellent ear and skull base surgery is never just about technical skill alone. It is about careful planning, anatomy, teamwork, judgment, humility, and lifelong learning.

As an ENT surgeon from Iloilo City, being able to train in this environment is both an honor and a responsibility. Every case I observe and every discussion I participate in adds another layer to how I will eventually care for my own patients back home.

This is only the beginning of a 6-month journey, and I’ve decided to share snippets of this experience weekly — the lessons, the cases, the challenges, and the growth that come with training in a highly specialized field.

Thank you to everyone supporting me throughout this fellowship journey. I hope you’ll continue following along as I learn more about hearing restoration, balance disorders, skull base disease, and the evolving world of otology and neurotology.

📣 Please be advised that starting May 1, 2026 until October 31, 2026, Dr. Jeric Arbizo will not be available for clinic appointments, in-person consultations, and procedures. He will resume clinical operations on November 2026.

He will be undergoing hands-on surgical and medical training for Otology, Neurotology, Cochlear Implantation, and Lateral Skull Base Surgery at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur.
