Team Para Sa Bayan Goiter ay Iwasan Para sa Mabuting Kalusugan
Sitio Nagpana, Brgy Lipata, Barotac Viejo, Iloilo
Team PSB: Penetrante Dino Fantonalgo Lanceta Carrillo

Sitio Nagpana, Barangay Lipata, Barotac Viejo, Iloilo is a community situated high above the mountainous parts of the municpality of Barotac Viejo, Iloilo where an indigenous group of people, known as the Aetas, live. The sitio has a total population of 741 and is comprised of 168 households. Iodine Deficiency Disorder is a condition wherein there is an insufficient amount of iodine in the body due to iodine poor soil, consuming food which is poor in iodine or inhibits the absorption of iodine (goitrogens), and lack of knowledge on proper nutrition. IDD in its severe form causes the thyroid gland to swell, which is known as goiter. Our team has found out that 23 out of 50 or 46% of children 6-12 years old of Sitio Nagpana have iodine micro-nutrient deficiency. There is also a high prevalence of goiter cases in the community. To combat this, our team will conduct lectures on proper hygiene and nutrition, engage the community in iodine soap making and agripreneurship, and ensure compliance to the ASIN Law. Our team will also build a small bahay kubo which will serve as the health center of the community and a place where they can gather for lectures and make their products. Through the bayanihan spirit and community engagement, our team hopes for a brighter, empowered and healthier Nagpana.

One of the aims of Team Para sa Bayan is to increase the knowledge of the indigenous people of Sitio Nagpana. Therefore, we conducted a pre-survey wherein we interviewed the mothers of each household (since they are the ones who usually takes care of everyone in the family). The pre-survey will help us know and assess the knowledge, attitude and practices of the community towards health and nutrition. The results of the survey were also used as a guide on what topics should be discussed more on our health education programs. The group also planned to conduct a post-survey at the end of the community immersion in order for us to measure the effectiveness of our health education and other programs.

The indigenous community of Sitio Nagpana surprised the team in a ceremonial acceptance, which was led by the tribal secretary and our community hero Mrs. Rachel Mateo. Each team member was given a bracelet made out of locally grown "nito" vines and handwoven to fit each of our hands. This was to show how the community accepted us wholeheartedly and their commitment to help us and participate in our planned activities in the future.
