Strabismus is a condition where the eyes do not properly align with each other when looking at an object. One eye may turn inward, outward, upward, or downward while the other focuses correctly. It can be constant or occasional and may affect depth perception. Strabismus is common in children but can also occur in adults. If left untreated, it can lead to amblyopia (lazy eye) or vision problems. Treatment may include glasses, eye patches, vision therapy, or surgery, depending on the cause and severity.
In Elio, the simple presence of an eye patch becomes a powerful symbol — helping normalize conditions like strabismus and challenging the stigma around visible differences. 💙 By showing a young hero confidently wearing an eye patch, the film sends a strong message: differences don’t define us — courage does.
