TIPS FOR COVID-19 ANTIGEN TESTING AT HOME
While testing done by properly trained medical personnel is ensures the VALIDITY and RELIABILITY - thus, HIGHER CONFIDENCE in the results, we know that medical facilities providing the service are backed-up and people cannot get an appointment.
IF you are considering to do testing at home, the following are some tips in order to make the test more useful for cohorting, isolation, and quarantine purposes.
CHOOSING A TEST KIT
1. If possible, chose an FDA approved test kit from a reliable source
2. While saliva test kits are okay, it is easier to standardize the procedure for nasopharyngeal swabbing.
DOING THE TEST
1. The first step is consulting a doctor. He or she will be able to guide you to see if you really NEED the test, the TMIMING, and PROCEDURE. Having a doctor will also be good to help you interpret the results, as well as to monitor you throughout isolation and quarantine.
2. Read the recommended procedure based on the type of test with manufacturer specifications (read or search the product leaflet online). Again, getting guidance a healthcare worker - MD, DMD, NURSE, MED Tech, who has been trained to do swabbing or saliva testing is best. The DOH recommendations inforgraphics are also included below
3. Check how long, ie, the time interval that you need to wait for the final result.
RESULTS OF THE TEST
1. Interpretation of each test is according to (1) manufacturer specifications and (2) the patient status in terms of exposure and symptoms. While the positive or negative result is objective, this must be matched with each specific case scenario of each patient.
2. Take a photograph of your results. For proper documentation, include the following:
Name
Age/Sex
Date of Test
Type (Nasal, Saliva) and Brand of Test
Time Start and End (directed by manufacturer specifications - for this particular test I used, it is 15 to 30mims observation)
Result (will be indicated by the product leaflet).
*the sensitivity and specificity are my notes and for personal reference early
I hope this helps.
Remember, A NEGATIVE ANTIGEN TEST DOES NOT RULE OUT COVID. Practices to curb spread - hand washing, wearing masks (at least a KN95 and above), ensuring proper ventilation, and social distancing is essential as we try to curb this surge once again.
As a last note, A COVID-19 RT PCR is still considered as the GOLD STANDARD to confirm COVID infection.
