In observance of Proclamation No. 971, s. 2020, the Department of Health (DOH) leads the celebration of National Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) Week 2025 every second week of July, with the theme, “IPC Champions: Leading the Way to Safer Healthcare.”

This year’s observance highlights the vital role of healthcare professionals and institutions in advancing IPC and ensuring safe, quality, and resilient healthcare. And this year, the NKTI’s past IPC Heroes and Champions will be commemorated and featured.

Congratulations NKTI-IPCU!

The National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) Infection Prevention and Control Unit (IPCU) and Maria Lourdes Bernadeth Manipon-Laxina, made history as the first from the Philippines to receive the esteemed APIC Heroes of Infection Prevention Award, presented by the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC).

The award recognizes exceptional individuals and teams who have made significant and sustained contributions to the field of infection prevention and control (IPC). This recognition is a testament to NKTI IPCU’s relentless efforts in advancing evidence-based practices, championing patient safety, and leading impactful programs that address both local and institutional IPC challenges.

The recognition highlighted NKTI's IPC initiatives, which, through innovative education and training, led to a remarkable reduction in healthcare-associated infection (HAI) cases. From an annual average of 276 HAI cases reported in 2016, the number significantly dropped to 151 by 2023, representing a 45.29% decrease. This progress underscores the effectiveness of IPC protocols in curbing infections, even under the challenging conditions imposed by the pandemic. Furthermore, the IPCU team established robust reporting and monitoring protocols which allowed rapid identification and isolation of patients with communicable diseases upon admission, thus minimizing exposure risk to other patients and healthcare workers.

Additionally, the IPC team has played a pivotal role in the implementation of new technologies and data analytics to track infection trends and outcomes. Through their relentless commitment to patient safety, the IPC team has built a culture of awareness and accountability, setting a high standard for infection prevention in the healthcare community.

This achievement would not have been possible without the dedication of the entire IPCU team, whose collaborative spirit and continuous pursuit of excellence continue to elevate standards in infection control and prevention in the Philippines.

As NKTI continues to strive for excellence in healthcare, this milestone stands as a symbol of hope, inspiration, and the power of collective action in keeping patients and healthcare workers safe.

The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA) is a professional society dedicated to improving public health by establishing infection-prevention measures and supporting antibiotic stewardship among healthcare providers. And the society has an International Ambassadors Program (IAP) that serves as a bridge, fostering collaboration between U.S. infection prevention experts and their international counterparts. Its mission is to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and cultivate impactful relationships across borders. Since its inception, the IAP has warmly welcomed 150 Ambassadors hailing from 53 countries, each contributing their expertise to a global network committed to improving healthcare outcomes.

And it is with great honor that we announce that Ms. Berna Manipon-Laxina, our esteemed Infection Control Nurse, has been selected as the Ambassador to the Philippines for the year 2024. Her commitment to excellence and passion for advancing infection prevention will undoubtedly enhance the program's impact within our nation.
