A first for St. Elizabeth Hospital, Inc. in General Santos City.

The Bien-Air Origo Drill System with Rapido Motor was used for the first time at SEHI during an emergency trauma case involving a right frontoparietal craniectomy and hematoma evacuation.

The case was led by Dr. Raymund Gagwis, with Dr. Michael Magbanua as anesthesiologist, and supported by the OR team:

Not every clot is new. Not every clot is easy. ✋🏻

And when those clots block the veins carrying blood out of the liver, the consequences can be serious.

This was a challenging Budd-Chiari syndrome case at Davao Doctors Hospital, involving a combination of chronic and subacute clots obstructing the liver’s venous outflow.

BCS can cause blood to back up in the liver, leading to abdominal swelling, liver congestion, portal hypertension, and progressive liver damage. Without timely treatment, it can eventually lead to liver failure.

The DDH team used the Penumbra Indigo System to remove the mixed-age thrombotic burden and restore venous blood flow from the liver.

For Davao Doctors, this marks their first thrombectomy using the Penumbra Indigo System.

But for this patient, what mattered most was getting blood flowing out of the liver again.

The NKTI Brain Attack Team, headed by Dr. Remy Berroya-Moreno, made the call early.

And that decision changed everything.

This marks the first neuro thrombectomy case at the National Kidney and Transplant Institute using the Penumbra System.

Led by Dr. Rudi Kuhn, together with Dr. Justin Chavez, Dr. Jen Macaraig (Neuroanesthesiologist), and fellows Dr. Cesar Sanqui, Dr. Ahnee Ahyong and Dr. Cyruz David, the team successfully restored blood flow in less than 10 minutes after turning on the Penumbra Engine, giving a stroke patient the chance to recover.

This is a step toward broader access to advanced stroke care. It means that another government hospital is now equipped to provide advanced neurovascular care, bringing timely stroke treatment closer to more Filipinos.

The momentum doesn’t stop there. NKTI Interventional Radiology is also growing its endovascular services to include minimally invasive treatment for pulmonary embolism, expanding access to life-saving care for patients facing another vascular emergency.

Every hospital remembers its first.

For The Medical City Clark, this marks their first Penumbra thrombectomy case of the year—and what a way to begin.

Led by Dr. Precious Samonte, the team successfully treated an Acute Limb Ischemia (ALI) case using the Penumbra Indigo CAT6, restoring blood flow to a blocked leg artery before the limb was lost.

Another step forward for advanced limb salvage in Central Luzon, and another reminder that timely intervention changes lives.

Led by Dr. Dennis Sacdalan with Dr. Toby Paulino and the rest of the Philippine General Hospital team, a blocked ICA to MCA was successfully revascularized using the Penumbra System, restoring blood flow and giving another stroke patient a fighting chance.

A week ago, he was fighting a dangerous blood clot.

Today, he’s fully recovered and back to being a kid, free from pain. 🫶🏻

At just 6 years old, he became the youngest patient in Neurospine Penumbra Philippines’ experience to undergo mechanical thrombectomy for deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a procedure that required not only advanced technology, but exceptional skill, precision, and teamwork.

Using the Penumbra Indigo System, the Interventional Radiology team at Southern Philippines Medical Center successfully restored venous flow, delivering a life-and limb-saving intervention when every minute mattered.

This remarkable outcome reflects the expertise, collaboration, and dedication of the SPMC IR team, led by Dr. Samuel Bangoy, assisted by Dr. Omar Abdua and Dr. Benjamin Ong, who continue to push the boundaries of minimally invasive care and bring hope to patients facing even the most challenging cases.
