Finding the right school for Cody, our ausome kid, was never easy. For months, we struggled to look for a school that would truly understand, accept, and accommodate him for who he is. There were moments of doubt, exhaustion, and heartbreak — especially when we encountered environments that simply were not prepared to handle children like Cody. Until one co-parent from his therapy center referred us to one school.
After a series of exams, interviews, and long hours of waiting while Cody completed his assessment, we finally received the email we had been praying for — Cody was formally accepted.
What made our hearts even fuller was the feedback we received. Even though Cody may not yet be fully at par academically for Grade 1, they noticed how good he was in reading, how well he followed instructions, and how he was able to complete an almost 2-hour assessment without whining or giving up — something very different from the feedback we received during summer class in preparation for grade 1 in another school before. They also noticed that Cody is good with drawing, molding and clay sculpture.
At that moment, I truly understood what our developmental pediatrician and family pediatrician have been telling us all along: NOT ALL TEACHERS ARE TRAINED TO HANDLE AUSOME KIDS AND ONLY AWESOME TEACHERS TRULY CAN.
To the teachers and schools who see beyond the diagnosis and recognize the potential in every child like Cody — thank you for making parents like us feel hopeful again. ’slifeonaspectrum
