"Bakit di pa kayo nag-residency? Sayang."
"Bakit di pa kayo nag-Australia? Sayang."
We've been asked those questions many times.
Over the years, we've realized that what's truly sayang isn't missing a title. It's living a life that no longer feels true to who you are.
A few months ago, after another 24-hour ER shift, my husband looked at me and said,
"Parang sinusuka na ng kaluluwa ko, Mom."
That said everything.
As doctors, we spend so much time teaching our patients how important sleep, movement, stress management, and relationships are.
Yet after every 24-hour ER shift, we were often too exhausted to live those same habits ourselves.
We'd spend the next day recovering.
We'd miss our workouts.
Our patience became shorter.
We weren't as present with Nico.
We realized we were helping others build healthier lives while slowly drifting away from our own.
That's when we knew the ER no longer aligned with the life we wanted to build.
After months of making small changes and listening more closely to what truly mattered to us, we gradually decreased our ER shifts and have now chosen to step away from them altogether.
We're intentionally building a different kind of life.
A life where we're present for our son.
A life where we practice the healthy habits we teach.
A life rooted in health, purpose, and the people we love.
In her book The Top Five Regrets of the Dying, Bronnie Ware wrote that the most common regret she heard was:
"I wish I'd had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me."
Another was:
"I wish I hadn't worked so hard."
When I'm 80 years old, will I be grateful I chose this path?
If I were to die tomorrow, would I know that I lived according to what truly mattered to me, or was I simply following the path I thought would make me happy?
I don't know what the right path is for anyone else.
But I do think the answers become clearer when we find the courage to pause, reflect, and ask ourselves those questions from time to time.
Maybe real success isn't about building a life that impresses other people.
Maybe it's about building a life you won't regret. 🤍
