Sometimes, one of the most powerful forms of support comes from someone who understands because they’ve been there.

A cancer diagnosis can bring emotional distress, uncertainty, and isolation. Peer support offers something uniquely valuable: connection with someone who understands the experience firsthand.

A new editorial highlights why peer support could become a cornerstone of oncology care—and what must happen to realize its potential.

🔹 Connection that matters: Shared lived experience can foster trust, hope, empowerment, and a sense of belonging.
🔹 Support that fits: Programs should reflect people’s cultural backgrounds, language, age, needs, and stage of the cancer journey.
🔹 Safety and sustainability: Training, supervision, confidentiality, and clear referral pathways are essential.
🔹 Stronger evidence: More research is needed to understand long-term impact, cost-effectiveness, and how to expand access equitably.

For psycho-oncology professionals, the opportunity is clear: integrate lived experience into supportive care while ensuring peer programs are safe, accessible, and sustainable.

How can we better recognize and support the role of peer support in cancer care?

Thank you for attending our webinar on distress. It was a very productive and meaningful time virtually. The knowledge we gained about distress that the cancer patients and their families and loved ones experience is something we cannot minimize. Psychosocial support and care is important and should be part of standard care. We were encouraged by the testimonies of our cancer warriors- Ma'am Adora, and Kyla. Thanks for all that you do for our patients and their families. Here are some post webinar pics :-)
