The Philippine Academy of Family Physicians - Negros Occidental Chapter, represented by its chapter president, Dr. Elijah Blaise Bimbao and CPD Coordinator, Dr. Remay Rose Abelarde, together with the Negros Occidental Medical Society (NOMS), represented by its local president, Dr. Fel Ronson Abejar and local PRO, Dr. Dolor Abejar, paid a courtesy call to the Local Government Unit of Bago City headed by its very proactive City Mayor, Hon. Marina Javellana-Yao to formally discuss a meaningful collaboration in advancing community health services.

This partnership marks the beginning of a shared commitment to bring accessible and quality healthcare closer to the people, starting with the provision of medical services during the City's Serbisyo sa Barangay Caravan. Through this initiative, we aim to support the city’s ongoing efforts in delivering comprehensive healthcare and community services, with plans to expand future health programs that will benefit not only the people of Bago City but eventually the entire Province of Negros Occidental.

An evening of fellowship, friendship, and renewed commitment marked the Acquaintance Party of the Philippine Academy of Family Physicians - Negros Occidental Chapter.

The gathering was filled with meaningful conversations, shared stories, laughter, and opportunities to strengthen the bonds that unite us as one chapter. A highlight of the evening was the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) lecture on the management of non-communicable diseases delivered by the chapter president Dr. Elijah Blaise Bimbao, which was accredited by PAFP with 2 CPD Units (Category I).

The chapter also proudly welcomed its newest Associate Member through Residency, Dr. Monika Pagcaliwagan, witnessed by our regional board of trustee via Zoom, Dr. Ophelia Saad during the induction ceremony, a testament to our continued commitment to nurturing the next generation of family physicians.

We were honored by the presence of distinguished leaders from our partner medical societies, including Dr. Fel Abejar, President of the Negros Occidental Medical Society, accompanied by the chapter’s Public Relations Officer, Dr. Dolor Abejar; Dr. Filipinas Ganchoon, President of the Canlaon Medical Society, accompanied by its Past President, Dr. John Dominic Trinidad. Also joining the celebration were Dr. Lesel Ganancial, President of the Philippine College of Occupational Medicine – Negros Occidental Chapter, and Dr. Bysshe Fernan, National Secretary of the Philippine College of Lifestyle Medicine, both component societies of PAFP whose partnership continues to strengthen our shared mission of advancing primary care.

The evening became even more memorable with fun-filled games thoughtfully prepared by the Family Medicine residents of Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital and Adventist Medical Center - Bacolod, exciting door prizes generously provided by our sponsors, and the joyful reunion of both longtime and new members.

More than a social gathering, the event symbolized a new beginning, one that fosters a stronger, more united, and more connected chapter where every member feels welcomed, valued, and inspired. We, in the Philippine Academy of Family Physician-Negros Occidental Chapter, stand in solidarity with the Joint Position Statement condemning the forgery of medical certificates. Let us uphold the highest ethical and professional standards in healthcare and unite in protecting the credibility of the medical profession and the welfare of the public.

Joint Position Statement on the Forged Medical Certificates for Fraudulent Financial Assistance

The Canlaon Medical Society-Philippine Medical Association Inc (CMSI) and the Negros Occidental Medical Society (NOMS), component societies of the Philippine Medical Association (PMA) are united in our firm condemnation of individuals who, without proper medical licensure, forge medical certificates attributed to our members. These falsified documents are deceitfully submitted to local government units (LGUs) in attempts to illegitimately secure financial assistance.

Such actions are not only illegal and unethical but also significantly undermine the integrity of the medical profession and the trust bestowed upon physicians. They distort the rightful distribution of resources meant for legitimate beneficiaries and weaken public confidence in the healthcare system.

We unequivocally state the following:

1. Condemnation: We strongly denounce the forgery of medical certificates, particularly by those who are not licensed medical practitioners.

2. Vigilance In Verification: We implore all LGUs to exercise rigorous diligence in verifying the authenticity of medical certificates submitted for financial assistance. Verification processes should include direct confirmation with the issuing physician or our respective medical societies.

3. Legal Action: We commit to supporting and collaborating with appropriate authorities in the investigation and prosecution of individuals engaged in the forgery and fraudulent use of medical certificates. We encourage our members to report any suspected instances of forgery without delay.

4. Security Enhancement: We will reinforce awareness among our members regarding security measures to safeguard our professional identities, signatures, and credentials and medical licenses from unauthorized use. The following control measures will be laid down to ensure the authenticity of the medical certificates:
a. use of dry seal with PRC
b. handwritten medical certificate forms with header content that includes the doctor’s name credentials, clinic and contact details
c. the use of control number
d. for printed medical certificates, we will include the header content that includes the doctor’s name credentials, clinic and contact details.

5. Public Awareness: We are committed to enhance awareness of the consequences of forging medical documents and uphold ethical standards in all interactions with the healthcare system.

Together, we are steadfast in our commitment to uphold the highest ethical and professional standards. We will actively collaborate with the stakeholders to include local government units (LGU) to combat fraud, protect the integrity of medical practice. By this we can appropriate healthcare resources to those that truly deserve.

✨ A New Chapter Begins for PAFP Negros Occidental Chapter ✨

On May 11, 2026, members of the Philippine Academy of Family Physicians – Negros Occidental Chapter gathered at Sugarland Hotel, Bacolod City for an evening of fellowship, learning, and leadership transition.

The ceremony commenced with a dinner lecture by a Pulmonologist, Dr. Paolo Hilado, followed by the formal induction of the Chapter’s 11 newly elected officers by PAFP National President, Dr. Limuel Anthony B. Abrogena. The event also welcomed 11 new Associate Members from our residency training programs, marking another milestone in the continued growth of Family Medicine in Negros Occidental.

In her valedictory address, Immediate Past President Dr. Christine Joy Valencia-Oligo reflected on the accomplishments of her term and expressed her gratitude to the officers, members, and partners who helped advance the chapter’s programs and initiatives. She also shared her hope that these endeavors would continue to grow and create greater impact in the years ahead.

Dr. Limuel Anthony Abrogena, in his message to the chapter, reaffirmed the National Academy’s support for the initiatives of PAFP Negros Occidental and emphasized the importance of collaboration, unity, and shared leadership in strengthening Family Medicine and the communities we serve.

In his inaugural address, incoming Chapter President Dr. Elijah Blaise D. Bimbao outlined his vision of building a stronger chapter identity, expanding opportunities for professional development through meaningful CPD activities, and fostering greater community engagement through relevant and impactful programs. He likewise called on every member to actively participate in shaping the chapter’s future.

Celebrated the heart of compassionate care last May 19, 2026 on World Family Doctor Day 2026! 💙✨

The two Family Medicine training institutions in Negros Occidental came together in meaningful celebration of this year’s theme, highlighting how family physicians continue to bridge compassion and innovation in an increasingly digital world.

The day began with the Adventist Medical Center - Bacolod, Department of Family and Community Medicine webinar entitled “Telemedicine with Empathy: Delivering Compassion Beyond the Clinic,” where Dr. Bea Villacin, MD, CFP, MPH, emphasized that genuine compassion and patient-centered care can still transcend online barriers and virtual consultations.

In the afternoon, the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital, Department of Family and Community Medicine held an onsite symposium featuring Dr. Orville Jan Atienza and John Michael Gabriel Zaragoza, who discussed the importance of digital literacy and the powerful role of social media and digital platforms in disseminating accurate and accessible health information to the public.

Capping the celebration was the fellowship night of the Philippine Academy of Family Physicians - Negros Occidental Chapter, bringing together its members in a joyful gathering that honored the invaluable role of Family Medicine in every community and family they serve.

An insightful lecture was delivered by Dr. Josephine Tan on the importance of appropriate antibiotic selection in infectious diseases, a timely reminder of responsible and evidence-based medical practice.

The evening concluded with exciting door prizes, shared laughter, meaningful conversations, renewed connections, and warm fellowship among colleagues and friends, truly embodying the spirit of Family Medicine: compassionate, connected, and community-centered.
