🚨HERO: A Venezuelan mother kept her three children alive by breastfeeding them for 11 days while they were trapped beneath the rubble of the OPP building in La Guaira.

All four were rescued alive in what many are calling a miracle.

A baby may appear healthy and respond to a parent’s touch, but an infant born with hearing loss may not show obvious symptoms. Hearing plays an important role in the development of speech, language, and communication. Without timely screening and appropriate intervention, a baby who is deaf or hard of hearing may experience difficulties during these critical stages of development.

To help the public, especially families and caregivers, access reliable information and better understand the importance of newborn hearing screening, the Newborn Hearing Screening Reference Center of the National Institutes of Health, University of the Philippines Manila, launched the animated awareness video, “Understanding Newborn Hearing Screening in the Philippines.”

Breast milk changes in three primary stages to meet a newborn's evolving nutritional needs:

Colostrum (days 1-5), thick and antibody-rich

Transitional milk (days 2-14), increasing in fat and volume;

Mature milk (from ~2 weeks onward), which provides complete nutrition.

Breastfeeding is the gold standard in infant feeding. All mothers are encouraged to practice breastfeeding TSEK to ensure that the baby gets the proper nutrition during the first 1000 days which is the critical period of growth and development.

Breastfeeding TSEK means:

“Tama” – immediate skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby after birth, and initiation of breastfeeding within the first hour of life.
“Sapat” – the mother need not worry if she is not producing much milk during the first few days after the child’s birth. Little breastmilk is enough for the first week and frequent breastfeeding ensures continuous breastmilk supply to respond to the increasing needs of the baby.
“EKsklusibo” – giving only breastmilk and no other liquid to the baby for the first six months. Breastmilk has all the water and nutrients that the baby needs for the first six (6) months after which the baby should be given appropriate complementary foods while continuing breastfeeding.
