5S KONTRA DENGUE: KEEP OUR COMMUNITY SAFE & HEALTHY!A warm, friendly reminder from the City Health Office – Health Education and Promotion Unit

Did you know the trusted 4S Kontra Dengue has gotten even stronger? We now follow the 5S — a complete, easy-to-follow guide to keep dengue far away from our homes, our kids, and our whole neighborhood!

Health prevention is always the smartest, kindest choice we can make for our families! Stopping dengue before it starts — saves lives, keeps our little ones strong, and means fewer worries and hospital visits for everyone. And this works best when we stand together: community engagement is our superpower! When every household checks their yard, every neighbor reminds each other, and every family follows these simple steps, we build a big, strong shield that mosquitoes can never get past. We’re not just protecting our own homes — we’re caring for the whole community!

THE 5 STEPS TO BEAT DENGUE:

1. SEARCH AND DESTROY Mosquitoes love hiding in still water! Check your flower pots, old tires, cans, gutters, and even bottle caps every single week. Dump out any stagnant water, scrub those containers clean, and cover water storage properly take away their breeding spots, and we take away their home!

2. SELF-PROTECT Keep those bites away! Wear long sleeves and pants when you’re outdoors, use safe mosquito repellent, and sleep under nets or in screened rooms. Small habits keep you and your loved ones safe all day and night!

3. SEEK CONSULTATION RIGHT AWAY Don’t wait! If anyone in your home has a high fever, bad headache, pain behind the eyes, body rashes, or joint and muscle pain head straight to your nearest Barangay Health Center or clinic. Early check-up means faster help, and faster help saves lives!

4. SUPPORT FOGGING IN OUTBREAK AREAS When our health teams do fogging in places with confirmed dengue cases, please welcome them! Clear your pathways, keep windows open as advised, and help spread the word, this quick action stops the spread fast and protects our most vulnerable neighbors.

5. SUSTAIN HYDRATION Healthy bodies fight harder! Drink plenty of clean water, fruit juice, and nourishing fluids every day especially children, elders, and anyone feeling unwell. Staying hydrated keeps your strength up and helps your body recover faster!

Let’s do this together! One small step from you, one kind reminder to a neighbor, and one community united , that’s how we make our city dengue-free and safe for all!

On June 9, 2026, the Health Education and Promotion Team (HEPO) of the Zamboanga City Health Office successfully conducted the “Sayaw Galaw Barangay Zumba Contest” at the Ground Floor, East Wing of KCC Mall de Zamboanga. The event was led by Dr. Shirisa S. Alawi, alongside HEPO staff members Gildalyn J. Beldua, RN, Cecille Lucero, RN, and Von Aguillon, RN.

The program commenced with Mr. Michael Bolido serving as Master of Ceremonies, who set an energetic tone and warmly welcomed everyone present. Following this, City Health Officer Dr. Dulce Amor D. Miravite delivered the opening address, stressing that physical activity and health promotion are essential pillars in building a stronger and healthier community.

The City Government’s unwavering commitment to health and wellness was strongly demonstrated through the continuous support of City Mayor Captain Khymer Adan T. Olaso. By actively promoting healthy lifestyles and physical fitness across all barangays, the Mayor ensures that health remains a top priority and that every resident has the opportunity to participate in programs designed to build a stronger, healthier, and more active community.

The program continued with the introduction of distinguished guests and the Board of Judges, where their diverse backgrounds and expertise were highlighted to ensure the competition’s fairness and credibility. The mechanics, guidelines, and judging criteria were clearly explained, along with the attractive prizes at stake: ₱10,000 for the Grand Champion, ₱5,000 for 2nd Place, ₱3,000 for 3rd Place, ₱2,000 for 4th Place, and ₱1,500 for 5th Place. After the judges were introduced, City Councilor Hon. Hannah M. Nuño delivered an encouraging message, emphasizing the value of accessible health services and the vision of a wellness-oriented future for Zamboanga City. Meanwhile, City Vice Mayor Hon. Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar gave an inspiring speech, urging the public to make physical fitness a daily habit. She reminded participants that joining the activity and giving their best effort is already a significant achievement in itself.

The highlight of the event followed immediately after: the contest proper, where participating groups from different barangays showcased high-energy, creative, and well-choreographed presentations. Their performances captivated the audience and truly embodied the core message of the activity—promoting health, vitality, and active living.

Once the presentations concluded, Dr. Rolando Lilienthal L. Bucoy, Medical Officer IV from DOH Region IX, reaffirmed the Department of Health’s full support for local health programs. He explained how regular physical activity is vital in preventing diseases and improving overall quality of life. This was followed by a heartwarming Community Dance segment, where participants, officials, guests, and spectators all joined in a unified routine, fostering unity, inclusivity, and shared joy through movement.

This was followed by a group photo session to capture the memorable moments shared during the event.

On April 28, 2026, at the Zamboanga Seafood House, the City Health Office - Health Education Promotion Unit (CHO-HEPO) successfully launches a crucial orientation for the Peer Support Oversight Committee and the Key Assistance for Developing Adolescent (KADA) Network.

This strategic initiative directly advances our commitment to the seven priority action areas, actively working to enhance health outcomes through robust health promotion. The established peer support groups proactively provide early intervention for youth mental health issues, and the KADA network is now poised to foster safe and supportive environments essential for adolescent development.

The program sees participation from various key stakeholders, including representatives from the City Mayor's Office, representatives from the Schools Division Office (SDO), the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO), the Gender and Development (GAD) sector, and 16 District Nurses from Zamboanga City.

It commences with preliminaries prepared by Ms. Cecile Lucero, HEPO Designate, followed by an insightful opening message from Mr. Ronald Planas, Executive Assistant of the City Mayor’s Office. The orientation then includes comprehensive sessions on Peer Support Groups for the Youth by Gildalyn J. Beldua, HEPO Designate, and a deep dive into the KADA Network by Von James C. Aguillon, HEPO Designate. An engaging interactive open forum ensures active participation, culminating in a motivational closing message from Dr. Shirisa S. Alawi, Medical Officer of the City HEPO, and a forward-looking session on insights by Ms. Joan Saure, Assistant City Coordinator for the Adolescent and Family Planning Program.

This foundational orientation empowers our community with enhanced preventative strategies, anticipating significant improvements in public health.
