Malnutrition is closer than we think.
๐In the Philippines, 26.7% of children under 5 years old are stunted, meaning they are too short for their age due to chronic malnutrition. Some regions have much higher rates (e.g., Bangsamoro at ~39%) (UNICEF Philippines, 2023a).
๐ Approximately 672,000 children suffer from wasting (low weight for height), with about half of them under age 2 (UNICEF Philippines, 2023a).
๐Among pregnant women, about 23% are anemic, which can lead to low birth weight and preterm delivery (UNICEF Philippines, 2023a).
๐There is a โtriple burdenโ of malnutrition in many Filipino children: undernutrition (stunting, wasting), micronutrient deficiencies (hidden hunger), and rising rates of overweight/obesity (UNICEF Philippines, 2023b; Global Nutrition Report, 2021).
Here in Ayala, Zamboanga City, 31 children have been identified as malnourished. These are not just numbers โ they are young lives at risk.
We, the WMSU College of Medicine clerks, launched the Ayala Project: Healthy Bites to address this problem at the grassroots level. As part of this initiative, we are holding the program โMula sa Bayan para sa Kalusuganโ on September 20, 2025 in Covered Court, Brgy. Ayala, Zamboanga City, 1:00 PM.
๐ How you can help:
Your donations will directly support these 31 children through meals, nutrition education, and health monitoring. Every peso counts in giving them the chance to grow, learn, and thrive.
