Mumps is a contagious viral infection that mainly affects children but can also occur in adults. It is characterized by painful swelling of the parotid (salivary) glands, located below and in front of the ears.
Cause:
• Mumps virus (Paramyxovirus)
• Spread through respiratory droplets and close contact
Signs & Symptoms:
• Parotid gland swelling
• Fever
• Headache
• Muscle aches
• Fatigue
• Pain while chewing or swallowing
Complications:
• Orchitis (in males)
• Oophoritis (in females)
• Meningitis
• Pancreatitis
• Hearing loss (rare)
Treatment:
• No specific antiviral treatment
• Supportive care
• Rest and adequate fluids
• Paracetamol or Ibuprofen for pain and fever
Prevention:
• MMR vaccine (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) is the most effective protection
