Thumb sucking is super common in kids — but the effects depend on _how long_ and _how hard_ they do it.
*Short term / Under age 4-5*
Usually no big deal. Baby teeth are soft + spacing is natural. Most kids stop on their own. No lasting damage.
*Long term / After permanent teeth come in, or if it’s intense*
That’s when problems can show up:
*1. Dental effects*
- *Open bite*: Upper + lower front teeth don’t touch when biting. You get a gap.
- *Overjet*: Upper front teeth push forward.
- *Narrow upper arch*: Roof of mouth can get more V-shaped instead of U-shaped
- *Crossbite*: Back teeth don’t line up right
*2. Jaw & facial changes*
- Pressure from thumb can change how jaw grows if it continues for years
- Speech issues sometimes: trouble with S, Z, TH sounds = “lisp”
Kids’ bones + teeth are flexible. If they stop before age 6-7, before permanent teeth fully erupt, most changes correct themselves naturally. After that, orthodontist might need to help with an appliance.
Refrain your child from such habits or get him/her checked for an early intervention.
