1. Uterus Healing
• After delivery, the uterus shrinks back (involution) to its pre-pregnancy size.
• Shedding the uterine lining and extra blood is a natural part of this healing process.
2. Placenta Site Healing
• The specific area where the placenta was attached to the uterine wall needs time to heal and seal off blood vessels, which leads to bleeding.
3. Blood & Tissue Shedding
• Extra blood, small clots, and tissue built up during pregnancy are naturally expelled by the body.
4. Hormone Changes
• After birth, hormone levels drop suddenly, triggering uterine contractions and bleeding.
5. Breastfeeding Effect
• Breastfeeding releases the hormone oxytocin, which stimulates uterine contractions. While this helps shrink the uterus, it can cause temporary increases in bleeding or cramping.
6. Normal Healing Process
• Overall, a moderate amount of lochia (postpartum bleeding) is completely expected and signals that the body is actively recovering.
Note: While mild to moderate bleeding (lochia) is normal for several weeks post-delivery, unusually heavy bleeding (e.g., soaking through a pad in an hour), passing large clots, or experiencing fever and strong pelvic pain requires immediate medical evaluation.
